To me, this thread is about Eddy Merckx bikes...meaning bikes built in the Merckx factory or designed by folks who work in/for the Merckx factory. As Longbeach said above, the litespeeds badged Merckx are Merckx bikes. Falcons with a Merckx logo are Falcons.

I would define it as Merckx bikes designed by, or built in, the Merckx factory. A Colnago is a Colnago, a Falcon is a Falcon and a Merckx is a Merckx. I suppose we'd have to ask the OP what he intended, but I'd bet that when he said show your Merckx bikes, he means show your Eddy Merckx factory built/designed bikes.

I'm probably being a snob, but calling a badged Falcon a Merckx is an insult to a Merckx and is a semantic game. Would you consider a Murray labeled Serotta a Murray? If you sold it on ebay would you just call it a Murray? You would call a Serotta with a Murray decal a Serotta because it has more cache. Calling the Falcon a Merckx is an attempt to give it a cache it doesn't really have. It's a Falcon with a cool label.

I don't call my Raleigh Professional a Raleigh Team...even though it says team on it.
What about Masi? They are/were not built by the Masi family but contracted except for a select few, same with Colnago until he set up his own factory.

A Murray built by Serotta is just that, A Serotta built Murray and it is worth significantly more than a Serotta.

But I would agree that it is largely semantics, and the OP is probably referring to EM factory bikes, none of which were built by Eddy's hands...

That's a different story just like what is happening now with Merckx bikes. Eddy is no longer the boss, no longer involved in the day to day operations like he was - the name has been sold to a conglomerate (sp) who now build with his name on the bike.
I have a California built Masi and I consider it a Masi - not an Italian Masi but just as good if not better.

I think it depends on who designed them and what the arrangement was (Masi and Colnago). I will tell you that I have far less interest in Masi and Colnago then I do in other Italian marquees. I rode a few Colnagos in my younger days and wasn't wowed by them. Masi would definitely rank far under De Rosa or Cinelli for me. A Serotta built Murray, in my opinion, is a Serotta with some Murray marketing. The Murray written there is no different than writing American Airlines.

The bikes not being built by Eddy's hands is irrelevant to me...we're talking about bikes associated with the EM factory.

Eddy got paid. His picture is on the head tube. He was happy it was there. He probably blessed the torch that made some of them. How different is a "real" Merckx from a lot of other makes out there....not very. What more do you need to know?

As different as a Serotta Murray and a regular Murray.

I don't recall having seen that one before. Even for a Merckx, that's a beauty.

It better not include the phrase "tall bike".

Jan, actually that will be kept as it stands. I do prefer riding it clipless, though. You may be thinking of another Faema that I will sell when the economy rebounds enough that I will break even

Thanks Jan.

The AZ bike is a 1985 Professional. The full pantographed bike is a rarer early 80's Professional, over the BB cable routing, flat fork crown. It is a true Faema Replica bike, as witnessed by the young Eddy foil badges. It has everything done right on it, down to the Everest freewheel and NOS Vittoria CX tubulars. I have swapped the stem and bars shown in the picture for a shorter Merckx pantographed stem and 64-40 bars. I even have a Merckx Faema musette that goes with it.

70s Kessel Merckx Frame

I guess we can debate whether it is a Merckx or not , but sounds like Eddy used the Kessel for more years than most any other frame?, so it must have been ok? Now..this one needs some love for sure to get it back on-track, but it has a flat crown fork, Campy dropouts, etc., so it might just make for a nice project?

That is one of the very early Merckx's. Possibly an Ugo De Rosa built frame. Well worth the time and money to do a proper restoration.

Here's mine..for those of you with a sense of humor. It's the only Merckx within my budget at the moment. It came with a bunch of old posters and bike parts that I got for a very reasonable price last week. It's fairly tattered, but some may consider that 'patina'

That is one of my 2 Merckx. Unfortunately, i can't help yu with your question. If you remove the fork, it has a sticker with a very exact production date on it, as you can see, mine was made on 18/12/89

Unfortunately, it is way too big for me.

Here are some pics:

And my second one, a 1973 Kessels-Merckx:

Stunning. What are the details, so that I may google and search ebay and decide that it's way too expensive for me to even think about?

Love that paint job.
