Specialized Expedition How'd I do?

I picked up this Expedition for 200 bucks at one of my LBS's. I should've haggled but I'm still new to the purchasing/buying game. It's a 60 or 61cm and it fits me like a charm. Sorry for my picture taking skills, they're lacking.

Crazy good. I am looking for one as well. :)

RFC 03-15-10 05:32 PM

Excellent score. On par with the Miyata 1000. $200 is a steal.

SoreFeet 03-15-10 05:58 PM

Yup good deal...Thank for those carbon clad, technophiles...They de-value our older classics. If you ever want to sell it let me know :)

The specialized hubs are likely seal cartridge made by Suntour or Sanshin.

Great deal, esp. in Oregon.

How'd you do? Well, Bear Cub, it's time to be a Webelos, you've made the grade....

A what?! I'm 18 and I don't even know what that means bro.

I enjoy haggling and I love barter...when I see a great deal, I shut up and take it without saying a word. There is no need to barter when you're getting a great deal, and you got a great deal. Be happy that you got a touring bike many would kill for at a price most would double and still be glad to pay.

I was going to say..... If I were selling that at $200 and somebody tried to haggle me, I'd kick their butt to the curb and keep the bike for someone who had better sense.

You're killin' me Robbie. I'm a Cubmaster and have a boy who's a Bear Cub Scout right now, so I get it, but 3-4 years ago that would have gone right over my head like it did over Bear Cubs....Here's Cub Scout Heirarchy
Tiger Cub Scout
Wolf Cub Scout
Bear Cub Scout
Webelos Scout
Its a natural progression see....

Just to frame this deal for the op, I looked at one three weeks ago that looked like something the cat dragged in.

$425 was the asking. I am still looking. Robbie found one for me as well, but I had just purchased a frame from a friend. Couldn't move that quickly.

I was looking at your pics pretty closely today. That bike has about two hours of work and she'd be ready for a very long ride.

I'd do a saddle, bar tape, tires, brake pads, and a general lube. Maybe new chain/cables as well, depending on wear.

For the 700 miler "I" am doing this summer, I have Surly racks and Berthoud fenders I'd use as well.

Have fun with her, you'll have some great adventures.

+1 - There is a special place in hell for those that ruin good touring bikes.

You did good though, I'd have totally jumped on that for what you paid.

Haha no worries guys. It won't ever become a fixie unless someone prys it from my cold, dead hands. I just put my fenders and racks on it and will be posting some hopefully better pictures up soon. I also replaced the tires with some Schwalbe Marathons. It's looking pretty bomber!

One question: Can I beat the hell out of this thing? I do a lot of riding/camping on BLM roads currently and wondering if this can handle the abuse of washed out roads, big rocks, logs etc. etc. It looks like it can but thought I'd ask anyways.

Singletrack, maybe not. Otherwise go for it. That's one of the reasons why I want one. The roads we are traveling on our adventure are the infamous Canadian all-weather highways, which translate to gravel roads. I've done a similar trip on a Z-1 Kawasaki thirty years ago, and you haven't lived till you are going sideways at 70 mph on gravel. Now that's exciting.

What is singletrack? This is like the umpteenth time I've read/heard someone say it but have no idea what it means. Canadian all-weather highways? I'm gonna check those out, sounds like fun :D

Here is a half decent explanation with a pic or seven. http://www.socaltrailriders.org/foru...-track-dh.html

cyclotoine 03-17-10 12:53 AM

glad it fits you, because it was obviously much to big for its previous owner.

mkeller234 03-17-10 02:27 AM

IIRC Webelos stands for We'll be loyal scouts... or something like that.

Like others have said, that was a great deal.

Bear cub 03-22-10 01:17 PM

I posted two new pictures of the bike built up for touring. I can't wait to take it out for a test ride later today! I would post the pictures in the thread but I don't know how. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Also, it needs new bar tape. Do any of you C&Vers know what color tape would look ballin' with the look of the bike besides black?
