That is a Sugino Super Maxy crankset with 47/34. It was on the bike when I bought it as a triple, with a 53 on the outside. It is being replaced soon since the bottom bracket that goes with it is way too wide, and the crankset is incompatible with the new sealed bottom bracket that I bought to replace it.

Haha, yes. I absolutely love that 1970 Mixte! If it were only a wee bit bigger for me, that would be my go-to bike. I've got a 1971 International that I've been slowly gathering parts for, so that'll eventually make up for the discrepancy I hope.

Well, this thread was my bedtime reading last night and now I'm all geeked up on Super Courses.

A few weeks ago, I stopped at a house on the side of the road that had about 30 bikes on display in the yard. Two brothers pick up bikes, repair them and sell them cheap. Nothing much of interest until I checked out the "Not yet worked on" pile. And I do mean "pile"!

I walked away with a 73 Super Course for $5. Almost wet myself. Crazy set up- it had big, steel Wald ape hangers and a 3ttt Record stem (which I thought only came on Raleigh models higher in the food chain). Beside the enormous, white, sprung, mattress saddle, the rest of the stuff looks proper. Simplex derailleurs and DT shifters, proper wheels and hubs, and a cotterless aluminum Stronglight crank with Lyotard pedals.

I stripped the parts off except for the crank because my standard crank puller doesn't fit. I planned to wait until winter to work on it, but all you people are making me jones for the ride.

So now that I've been informed that the wife and kid are going out for a bit, I'm going to see if I can get a quick build together from the parts bin. You know, just to make sure it works.

Nice work Mike! Did you trim off the end of your handlebar tape so that it finishes at an angle? It never occurred to me to do it that way, but it looks very neat.

Yes. I trim the ends of the bar tape at an angle, make it easier to get a finished end that way.

After riding my 59cm Super Course for a year, I decided it was just a hair too small. I searched and finally found a larger frame on DC Craigslist. I built it up with components from the smaller frame, plus some swell GB rando bars (Thanks mparker326!), and bar cons. The saddle bag is a re-purposed Dooney and Bourke ($8 on eBay) which works quite well for a tools, phone, keys and a bite to eat, with room for a mini u-lock if needed. The new frame and bars fit me like a glove.

My '84 purchased new. Wolber Gentleman 81 rims laced to Specialized cartridge bearing hubs were built by a good friend in 1985. I also added Cyclone MK II derailleurs about that time. The Nitto stem and bar end shifters were installed a few weeks ago.

I think it's Origin8 fake cork. I just buy whatever cork wrap's cheapest on Amazon. Tey all seem pretty similar to me.

Makes mine seem tiny I do think those early 80's US Raleighs are some nice frames. I have an Olympian in 555sl that is swell.

K well this thread showing up has inspired me to get off my butt and start on the 74 sitting in my garage. After doing a fairly nice cleaning of the paint I've decided it really doesn't need a complete repaint/stickering, just a touch up paint job and stickering.

So anyway do any of you all know a good paint match for the candy red and white on the 74's? I plan on doing the touch ups, sanding em down, stickers, then a couple layers of clear coat. But I want a really good color match, especially on the white where it'd show up the most. Preferably a brand and color number if possible.

Whenever I need touch up paint for an older frame, I take it to the Hobby superstore near work. They seem to have every color under the sun. I always find a really good match. Other than that, take it to a Automotive paint store and they'll match it and mix you up any quantity you like.

Probably a 25" nominal: it's a hair under 64cm center to top, and the top tube is about 58cm ctc. Thanks a lot!
