Cornelo build **ride report**
 

well this was to be my second winter project but after that Vento got derailled and some travel I am behind schedule. anyway I got the Cornelo out of storage and took it to the shop to have the frame prepped and the BB and HS installed. ( I could do the installation but not all my tools are not here and I really don't want that much mess here)

so the other day I picked it up from the shop with the HS and BB installed and took a bunch of pics. since this frame is a bit... dare I say rare, I wanted to try and get some good pics of everything. I posted most of them on my flicker site. same name as here, btw.

now hear is where things start to stall out. I thought the seller told me it was a 27.2 seatube but it turns out to be a 27.0, so now I need a different seatpost. alsothe Salsa stem I wanted is out of production so now I have to figure something else out.

atleast the wheels came out right and look fabulous.

here is the parts list so far

the fabulous Cornelo frame and Campagnolo Triomphe group, sans hubs

wheels shimano STX 'bronze' (I know but I am trying to go all 7spd shimano or 9spd Campi cassette) hubs laced to a beautiful set of Ambrosio Montreal RED anodized rims with a crows foot pattern.

the seatpost is to be a, NOS, SR with a Campi 2bolt style top. seat undeterimed as yet

bars are Nitto B115 and the stem is still undetermined as well (THANKS alot SALSA LOL)

what Salsa were you trying for?

Hi unworthy1, I really wanted a S.U.L. in 105d rise with 120 ext. I am not sure just when they went out of production, but I checked ever site I normally shop on or can think of. I also keep watching ebay.

I'm going to the shop after our ride. I'll look around.

What color?

Black or silver/alloy?

I started putting the bits and peices on the Cornelo the other night and ran into a snag or two. when I had the frame prepped we (myself and Stan, the wonderful mechanic and fabulous wheelbuilder at D&Q) completely forgot two things.

we never thought about tapping the derailleur hangerm and the bike was built with 126mm spacing. since I am trying to stuff 7spd cassette wheels in and it is just too tight. (normally I do not have much trouble but this frame is tight it actually measures close to 125) so back to the shop it goes.

the worst part is these are those jobs I could do if I had all my tools and proper workspace. I know I could use the string method to set the frame but then there is aligning the dropouts (my next tool purchase). anyway enough whining here is the project so far.

well I got the Cornelo back from the shop, but then went out of town for a week or so. I tried to finish it off today but I hit a few vexing snags. :cry:

since I couldn't find the Salsa stem I wanted I had to look for something else and found an old Bianchi 90d Nitto.

the Cobalto brake levers I wanted to use were in worse condition than I recalled so I had to find some others and ended up with some early Veloce or Xenon with a QR. a bit redundant having two but oh well :(

I wanted to run nonaero cables but the rear cable had a funny angle to it because of the through the TT cable routing. :twitchy:

then to top it off the front brake cable housing in the set from V.O. is way too short! the last insult was the barwrap tearing! :cry:

on the good side I was able to take a few laps of the parking lot and it rides like a dream! again just cruising the parking lot the handling was clean and crisp. shifting was quite smooth with the Triomphe RD, Doppler shifters, and UG chain.

I still need to replace the FB cable and wrap the bars, but here is the progress so far. :)

do the brake cables need to be a bit shorter?

Looking good! There was a recall on the cromo Salsa stems, which is why it's probably been hard for you to find one if thats the model you've been using.

Wow, this really has been a bumpy road. It's looking good though, that is a very very cool frame. Fingers crossed the finishing touches go smoother.

Hello Everyone thank you for the wonderful Compliments and support. the stem I wanted is discontinued.

OK I am still trying to get all the bugs out of my teeth from the big grin on my face. :D

despite the foulup on the brake cables I could not wait to ride this beautiful machine! the ride was wonderful. the ride was smooth and comfortable and the handling was very crisp. IIRC the handling seemed to be similar to something like a Geurceotti, or Pinerello (these were old team frames I only had for a few months). overall it was fast, surefooted, and cornered very well. I didn't really hammer on it but did put it through its paces.

the wheels are still arrow straight (thanks Stanly) the crowsfoot lacing is great, although you can't see it while riding.

the Brooks Colt (on testride loan) was very comfortable, and looks really great!

this was my first time with leather barwrap but I gave it a whirl. I think it looks pretty good for a first attempt, although perhaps brown will compliment the seat better. I may need to relace the left side, if I do I may get some gold thread.

try and look past the hedious black brake cable.

Looks great, though I think the cables are too long.

I thought we had a 'what did you just buy for your bike' thread here in C&V. I looks around but couldn't find it. since I was lavishing so much on my babies I thought I would spend a few of my hard earned sheckles on myself.

I had to get a freind of a coworker in England to buy the Bianchi scarves, umbrella and black armwarmers, then another coworker 'muled' them back.
I also found this most unusal reflector reflector down in Rehoboth last week.

I'm afraid some may view that reflector as a challenge.

in what way? I thought about putting it on the cornelo but I don't want to take it out of the package

Wow, your bike turned out great. I think the color of leather you used on the bars actually looks really nice. Those nice bar plugs look like they might serve another function? The "your bike sucks" sticker made me crack a smile when I saw it. I know you often get a little hell over the stems you use but it doesn't look out of place to me at all on this bike. This is definitely my favorite of the bikes you posted... maybe a toss up with the split seat tube one. Does the Brooks Colt have a hard shell underneath? It looks nice in the pictures, to bad it's a loaner.

I shortened the RB cable about 4" looks much better now. unfortunatly VO is out of red housing sets. yellow?

I love the color and look of the leather but, I may have to change it for something padded though. the only purpose the barends serve is "bling" the YBS stickers are great, and much easier to read than my socks. the Rigi is a great bike but riding it is not for the faint of heart. yes I like this stem alot, Bianchi made a great call specing their bikes with them in the early '90s. gives you just a bit more upright position and is not noticable.

I took some measurements the otherday but lost them, so I have to redo it. anyway IIRC the angles are right around 73.5ish parrelell, the wheelbase was about 38.5 with the rearwheel in the center of the dropout. I had a chance to get it weighed today and in fighting trim sans waterbottles it tipped the scale at 23.15lbs. not bad for an late '80s upper midlevel steel road bike.

Quill stem and rims are simply ORRIBLE.

That bike is loud and proud. I love it!! Great job all around. :thumb:
