Inspired by this years build-off
When I realized (finally) that the point of the build-off was NOT to come up with the slickest classic or vintage bike for a paltry $149, but to spend $149 on a bike worth $10, I knew it was time.
Time to take a load to the DUMP!
Felt good to throw those dozen bikes in the recycling bin. I didn't even bother to give them to the store, just melt 'em down. Good stuff mostly, but CRAP in my book.
It's a small contribution, but maybe your bike is worth more now.

Some of this year's entries were spraypainted. A couple were painted with a brush. At least one was professionally refinished. At least one was powdercoated.
All were classy, if not classics, and if the contest threads are any indication, the participants had a lot of fun. Enjoyment was the real theme. As a mere spectator, I enjoyed the contest almost as much as the "competitors".

Kurt does your local Mall frequently have tables of Bike parts?
I would go to the mall more frequently if they had that around here

Kurt I guess Rigi used the same decals as Pinarello. you seldom see them with decals, but I wonder if that one is the stainlesssteel version. also do you know how did you attach the FD? the 'stock' one wasd a custom Gian Roberts
Junkyard I'll have to check that place out one day

Do I taste sour grapes in this thread?

Come now, the point really was to build a bike for the fewest dollars that the judges liked. It was a completely subjective contest based solely on the tastes and preferences of the judges. Did we the contestants know what they would like? Of course not. The only thing we knew is that we would receive more points for fewer dollars spent. That was the only certainty.

BTW, I have some Raleigh Sports, Robin Hood, and Schwinn EF frames banging around here in NH if you want one for your next build. Let me know!

YOU BET!!!
A whole vineyards worth!
So many in fact, that's why I tossed a huge pile of bikes and stuff, I don't give a Shimano any more!
I have all the bikes I need and the rest is just garbage, so out it went.
That, and I'm tired of going the extra mile for folks, who end up ripping me off.
Like that idiot DirtDrop..sorry Grand Bois now, who thinks that he shouldn't have to pay for the extra pinstripes I did.
"If I'd have known it would cost more, I never would have agreed to it"
What? Are you F****** DAFT???
You go to a restaurant and when the waitress brings the bill and then you order dessert, you think it's FREE????
DUH, it's on the bill!
That, and usually there is a 15% or more gratuity.
Anybody ever tip me, besides BBattle, Zorro & Scooper?
Yeah, I don't see any other hands going up.
So I got my panties in a wad and tossed bikes, hung up the paint equipment, deleted my painting posts and only log in now, to stir up trouble.
After all, TROUBLE is my middle name.
SEE YA!

Sometimes the fingers just don't communicate well with the brain. Thanks for catching that.
Mark,
You must be having a bad day.
The challenge any independent business owner has is quoting an accurate price before the work is started, or being completely transparent with the customer and then saying "I don't know how long your job will take, but my hourly rate is $XX.00."
I believe I recognized this as you worked on Sporty over the course of a year. Even though you never asked for additional money, I sent you more based on my "best guess" as to what you did and in appreciation for your work.
From the customer's stand point, the challenge was when the work would be completed. I came to a point where I could have let your pace frustrate me, or just be patient and let the master have as much time as was needed to create a masterpiece. I chose the second option, but then my profession lends itself to selecting such an option.
Now it's no fair on my part to chide you a little about your behavior, without saying, I could have not been more pleased with how you painted my Super Sport! And if you feel I owe you even more for the paint job, please let me know in a PM or email.

And your talent inspired me to create Mrs. Sporty for my wife, albeit it pales in comparison.

Huh - honestly, it would never have occured to me that I should tip the painter. I thought it was a contract-type pay the bill sort of thing.

I never expected the painter to try to extort additional money from me weeks after I paid him $50 over the agreed upon amount and took delivery of the frame.
