Updated Team Miyata

Not sure of the year, but with the aero top-mount dt shifter boss I would guess this Team Miyata is from the mid '80s(?). I used a fork made by Mike Terraferma, a really nice guy and an excellent frame builder here in Miami. The frame shows very little use and only a couple of minor chips, the worst being on the dt from the front brake. I built it with a Dura Ace 7700 group that I had waiting around for the right frame. It's fitted with Williams 19 wheels, a King NoThreadset, a Litespeed Ti stem, and Nitto Neat 420 bars. I finished it this weekend and took it out today for an easy training ride and I have to say it is outstanding in every way. It's no lightweight at 19lbs 6oz, but it's stiff, stable, and a real pleasure to ride.

Well, here it is. Hope you like it.

The crank was a bit scuffed so polished was the way to go.

I had a buddy of mine who's a machinist fabricate the dt cable stops

I think this is a clever way of routing the shifter cables at the bb.

Beautiful.

Yours looks more like a early 90's model.

I'm excited for my own Team Miyata that is finally coming together....such nice bikes. Very cool cable routing for the shifters.

I'm certainly not a Shimano expert, but I think the top-mount down tube shifters aren't that late, since by then SIS was around. I also have a Miyata 912 with the same shifter boss and it's an '84.

Very nice! The one-off barrel adjusters are awesome, and 19 lbs. is nothing to scoff at!

Nice polishing work, are you related to Khatful? :innocent:

No, I only went up to 2000 grit. I understand he goes all the way to 40,000.

bumpalong 04-06-10 03:59 PM

What a beautiful job. Congratulations!

Did you say that frame finish is original? I'm amazed. It almost looks like a fresh powdercoat.

Elev12k 04-06-10 04:04 PM

Really nice Miyata :thumb:

Nope, I stop at 2000 as well...just lots of Mothers.

jet sanchEz 04-06-10 04:12 PM

How do I get my cranks to look like this? Just Mother's and some elbow grease?

Nice job on the build!

Thanks.

I bought the frame just like you see it and I'm fairly certain the finish is original. First, I doubt anyone would have bothered to professionally repaint a Team Miyata as they just aren't that valuable. Second, it just looks like a factory job, consistent with the paint quality of other Miyatas I've seen. Miyata paint quality for the most part is very, very good.

5cagm 04-06-10 05:37 PM

That is absolutely stunning. I'm jealous to say the very least!

miamijim 04-06-10 05:55 PM

I like it, it looks good.

The frame is from the early 80's.....maybe '81. Its been re-decaled.

I think you nailed it as a re-decaled '81. Funny, I didn't think to look that far back. The frame is identical to the one in this '81 Miyata catalog page:

I think it was re-decaled a while ago, but I'm still pretty certain the paint is original.

FrenchFit 04-06-10 09:36 PM

Very nice, but I'd be afraid to ride that bike. It would probably live in the garage.

jish1969 04-06-10 09:43 PM

That's hot...

That is actually what I'm going to do with mine unless I can find one with that nice of a finish on it still. Apparently it will take more than spit shining Some DA 7400 to pass with the curve you're setting in this class.
