Tension Problems?
Hey all-
Sorry if this is a repeat, feel free to flame me if that's the case. Here's the problem: The other day I noticed that the tension in my left barrel adjuster was too slack and so I could only use the lower gears on my bike. I tightened it up and then today I noticed that my chain is scraping the outermost side of my front derailleur cage whenever I shift onto the higher sprocket. I haven't changed the trim on my barrel adjuster yet, but I have a feeling that will be the fix. Do you guys have any suggestions for what else it might be or what I can do to prevent this in the future? I ride an '82 Peugeot 10-speed, btw, it's my first road bike and I've only had it for about 3 months so I'm still adjusting. Thanks for the help! |
an '82 Peugeot? where are the barrel adjusters? it sounds odd that taking up slack in the cable would make the chain rub hte outer part of the cage.

When you pull the shift lever down, does the front derailleur move towards, or away from the frame? If it moves towards the frame, it could be that you pulled a teeny bit too much slack out of the cable. That said, I doubt this is the cause, since the only front derailleurs I know of that operated this way are a few models of older Sun Tours. More likely, you need to adjust the high setting of the front derailleur by loosening it a bit. Try 1/2 turn increments, and test until you have it right.

Yeah, it moves towards the frame, I'll try adjusting the front derailleur first though. Thanks!
