New Frame, New Perspective.
Hey guys, I'm very new to the vintage stuff, so please forgive my, "Newb-ness." I have been riding expensive Aluminum/carbon bikes for years, and unfortunately I've become numb to "cool" bikes, so to help that I'm starting a new project bike and I would like some help from you guys. I picked up an '84 Trek 620 touring frame and I want to set it up as a touring bike. I really like the idea of trying to find vintage/original parts, but I want the bike to be able to hold up to abuse as I actually hope to ride around the coast of Michigan this fall. So ultimately I would like mostly new parts on it, but I want to keep it classy looking. BUT, what could I look for on eBay that I really shouldnt have an issue with durability? (Crank, Derailleurs?).
I'm think I'm building a not-so-vintage wheelset for it, most likely Open-pro wheels laced to silver Ultegra hubs, although I am open to suggestions for a good, solid set-up. Thanks in advance! :thumb: |
Welcome Adam.
I think you'll find incredibly with-it folks who will with you with this frame. Could you add a pic or three to your post to help start the ideas/comments flowing? I recently acquired a 1977 Trek and I am going down a similar path as you, although very slowly. I'll throw an idea or two into the thread tomorrow. |
Well, I mean, if you're going to go with a modern group, go for it.
Older derailleurs and a kind of older crankset will work with modern STI's, at least from my experiences with Campy (I ride a crankset from 1990 and derailleurs from the same era with 2004-ish brifters). Also, you could go with a thread fork/headset/stem set up. |
Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it.
I'm thinking XT Rear Derailleur, Tiagra Front, Bar end shifters, R100 Brake levers, Nitto bars/post, B17, Cane Creek 100 threaded headset... for starters. I still haven't decided on a crankset. If you're going 700c tires you'll want to look into long reach brake calipers. I believe the bike would have been fitted originall with 27". My '82 610 that all original has 27" wheels.

I was looking at either the R556 or the R730 from Tektro, one is Long reach and one is extra long reach... any advice here?
