hi! downtube shifter question

Hi all.

I have a Trek 1220
https://www.bikepedia.com/Quickbike/B...1220&Type=bike

and both my shifters aren't shifting and are basically broken imo. so i've decided to get downtube shifters. I was wondering which of the two options would be the best for me and if neither, which do you recommend?

THANKS!

hi!

you don't want the first option. your bike already has braze-ons for DT shifters, so you want to utilize them. iirc, shimano 600 levers require slightly different braze-ons, but i could be wrong. your safest/best bet would be to get some 105 7-speed shifters, which will be indexed. those 600 shifters are not indexed.

there is no picture in your bikepedia link. what kind of shifters do you have now? if you already have a shimano 7 spd index why would you want to install friction shifters?

I agree with illwafer a pair of 105 or 600 shifters should work.

600 index shifters do not require a special brazeon boss. there is different 'backing' plates flat and concave so that is the only consideration. but I do not believe the DT is fat enough to require the flat backing plate.

Get some 105 or 600 tricolor (dark grey) DT shifters. $25-$40

There actually were some here not long ago on a trade thread.

If you really like the bike and ride the hoods, spend $80 on some 7-sp Sora STI shifters, or $100 on some RSX if they're available.

+1 Fix the STI, or find some ebay replacements. Bike is worth it. Use what you are planning to pay for DT shifters as a partial payment for the STI.

Also, there is a guy in Spartanburg, SC that fixes STI. Give him a shot.
