Campagnolo C Record 1984 crankarm, is this the real thing?
 

C Record experts, step up please!

I came into a solitary Campagnolo (left side) crankarm. From the shape I immediately thought of C Record, more about the shape later.

It has an engraved Campagnolo shield. it has a date code '4' in a circle: 1984.

I compared the shape to a C Record chainset I have with date code '52' in a square (c. '89?): the 1984 one is very similar, almost identical, but decidedly slimmer. The end with the pedal hole has a chamfered inside, unlike the beefier and straighter form of the later C Record.

C Record was introduced to the market in late 1986, or 1987, right? Prototypes were from 1984? I know there were prototype Delta brakes in 1984.

So what is this? Any input would be nice, even though someone might reveal that this is not C Record ...

Looks like C Record to me, I did not follow them too much was away from cycling at least road bikes in the late 80's.

The '84 date code is indeed rare, but in later 1985 the group less the delta brakes was out there, and they had to start making parts sometime...
The whole intro of that group was haphazard. Not one of Campagnolo's better marketing and supply periods. At the onset, everyone wanted the cool looking high flange hubs, but they were not around, the low flange was only ordered by the distributors as that was the dominant type in the previous top line hub set.

I thought C-Record all came with the self extracting nuts?

They can be removed you know ...

By themselves, apparently.

You need a two-pronged thingie ...

30% of the time you need a 7mm allen wrench
and some good curse words
and a reverse threaded crank extractor
because the shoulder of the bolt has sheared itself off and failed to extract anything except it's own now-broken self
