Should I call Drew?

Here is a very beat up Schwinn World I picked up. The chrome beater wheels w/rust need to go (the tires may be salvageable). I'll retain the racks and some bags. I can either
  • sell frame/fork/seatpost/brakes/stem/dropbars for about $45
or
  • add CR18 level 700c wheelset with 700 x 32 almost new tires
  • change out bars with alloy and 105 aero levers
  • change out crankset with better alloy crankset
  • apply white Fizik tape
  • new cables and brake pads
  • replacement saddle
At an estimated cost of $100. I'd have to get $150

Vote now!

Well, how old is it, I believe that some of the later Worlds had Chrome-Moly main tubes. If that is the case, then resurrect her. If not, I'd find a better frame to upgrade, or turn it into a nice SS or fixed gear (Read; Brakes).

FlatTop 04-17-10 05:25 PM

This would be a nice keeper. I'd be tempted to keep the original crankset, fit upright bars, racks and a decent saddle, and give the World a try as a utility bike.

I would either donate it to your favorite thrift shop, or sell as is.

Wisco 04-17-10 06:16 PM

I don't know your market, but here, I'd generally throw away most of the parts (save the tires, stem, and brakes), overhaul the BB and HS, and sell the bare frameset for $50. For some reason it seems like people like a clean slate for their fixie builds, and seeing the old brakes and cranks etc makes them think that it'll be more difficult.

that little DT derailleur cable stop will bring you about $10 on ebay... just saying

Shp4man 04-17-10 06:38 PM

Those are some aggressive looking tires.:)

I have found if I strip the bike and remove the wheels and crankset that Drew becomes excited. At the same time I always have a strong desire to bring bikes back to life. For a cash profit and less effort I should sell to Drew but there is a certain satisfaction to restoring a bike.

The market would possibly support $90 - $100 with a little work - it'd be almost worth it if I salvage the tires. The wheels with tires will go for $15 - $25. The bike is small, I have not measured but perhaps 50cm. I had someone drive 90 miles from Richmond because there are no small bikes there. I could possibly get $175 with the upgrades.

Yes, I'm counting on it - having sold a couple already!

Yep, they have a blackened area and had ants spilling out when I looked at the bike this afternoon!

sykerocker 04-17-10 06:44 PM

No bike has ever treated someone so horribly that it deserves to go to Drew.

I believe they're Kenda's - I use the same tyre on my Magneet tourer. Rather like them.

You got 'Wenzel'd'....send it to me for proper disposal.

Whats the thing hanging off the center of the bars?

mrhedges 04-17-10 08:08 PM

Not to be a bike snob (really I'm not) but a schwinn world is not something to fret to much over. Do what you'd like to it, if you want to flip it go ahead its a decent bike but not a kitten to be saved, in my opinion.

If it was mine and I didn't know anyone that would fit it and needed a bike, I would strip all the parts I wanted off it for future projects and sell the frame... there is a satisfaction that comes with selling someone a complete bike that you repaired.

roccobike 04-17-10 08:11 PM

I look at selling a low end bike, like this one, to Drew as a sort of sacrifice to keep nice frames/bike intact. So my vote is sell it to Drew. I'd actually rather that bike go to Drew where it will be used than go to some road bike wannabe that rides it once, decides they don't like it and sits another 10 years before it makes it back to the yard sale circuit.

I'm with the previous two posters. It's one thing to bring a "meh" bike (sorry if I've offended sensibilities, but I rather think my characterization is charitable) back if you're going to use it, or if it's going to a friend, of loved one, or if it belonged to your dad, or it's put needed food on the table, or even to improve your skills as a mechanic. In the absence of these factors, I'd calculate based on $/hour, rather than some noble cause. I'd rather be out riding than saving every frame I came across.

Now if it were a more special bike, I'd reconsider the above. It's all about personal priorities, but I don't much care whether someone "Drews" this one, or not.

It's the hanger for a handlebar bag. I think the brand is Rockport.

bigbossman 04-17-10 09:15 PM

Sell it ot me for $40, so I can continue to make coeds squeal with delight.

Rube Goldberg would heartily approve. :D

Do they seem to be getting younger every year? Have you found any that almost couldn't balance a bike? A couple ladies (one a fitness instructor!) were so wobbly I ran to get my cell phone in case a call to 911 was required.

How about put a singlespeed kit on the rear wheel, remove 1 chainring from the crankset, replace the saddle and bar wrap, change the brake wire if it needs it and be done for under 40 bux.

Funny you should mention that. I had a little one show up for a 50cm bike I was selling. Her boyfriend had to run along beside her like she was a child, holding onto the seat. Twice he let go, twice she crashed. Once, she tried a wide turn at the end of the street at about 2mph, and halfway through panicked and went straight into the curb. Didn't touch the brakes, didn't try to get off - just rolled straight into the curb from about 10 feet out and piled up. I was amazed.

I checked the bike over carefully, and it was not damaged - not even a scrape on the new bar tape. I was doubly amazed.

They declared the bike "too big" for her, and went on their way. I sold it to the next woman that showed up, who was so thrilled with it that she sent me a follow-up "thank you" a couple of days later.

+1

I get no satisfaction working on bikes like this one. I'd hang on to the rack and sell the rest as a project bike.

Take Drew's $100.
