The component codes are probably your best bet Lex (assuming they're original...) http://www.vintage-trek.com/component_dates.htm Same is true for the Nishiki.

Just as a thought: If the bike is a 100 anniversary bike and Puch was founded in 1889, wouldn't the bike be a 1989 model?

Melonbar, I think that's a pretty good guess. Puch is Austrian and was later bought by Steyr. It was for over a century the pre-eminent bike manufacturer in Austria and southeastern Europe.

By the mid-late 70's the company was "Steyr-Daimler-Puch" and produced Steyr, Puch and Austro-Daimler bikes. (and motorcycles)
