can this frame be saved?
4 Attachment(s)
First off-it came without wheels-I picked it up for parts. Raleigh carlton competition. Serial # A1632-makes it a 70 something or a 66. Reynolds 531 sticker on it/I think single butted-huret dropouts and dr-strange looking crank (specialites?) Havent taken the fork out yet-so that part is a wait and see. Don't know where to go with it-to see if it could be repaired.
Any thoughts? What was the stock wheelset? (jut an after thought) |
I think it is a 73
My 73 International has the "A" serial# |
I hate to say it... But there's no saving that frame aside from having the top and down tubes replaced. Suck cause it's so pretty. Hang those components on just as nice frame, though. Maybe hang the frame on the wall or something.

send it to Cudak888 in FL, he has the big Park tool that's the only hope for it, if there is any.
|
If you're willing to spend shipping to and from (and accept the fact that the results might not be positive), I can give it a shot on the Park HTS-1 headtube angle straightener I have on loan from one of the local bike shops. This is exactly the type of frame I was looking to test. Please send me a PM.
See full discussion here - I suggest reading all four pages: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ubes-take-note. -Kurt |
Frame is toast. Strip it down, and ship just the frame to Cudak888.
|
I'd recommend sending it to a framebuilder to have the top and downtubes replaced. Find one that works with Reynolds so you can keep it original.
Is that lower headlug cracked, or the headtube rippled? If so, it's probably not cost-effective to repair. Looks like the fork survived the crash, anyway. |

Such a great post-very informative! I deem it not worth the cost of shipping. Even if (big if)
sucessful-finding a fork for it would be slim to none. Pretty sure its toast as well...Greatly appreciate the offer tho. Love these forums. Thanks again Cu |
IMO there's nothing that's going to save that frame except replacing the top and down tube; maybe the head tube too! That will be expensive, though it is one of those great Capella-lugged Competitions. The fact is that the fork may be damaged too, with a collision that was so violent.
|
That's a crying shame. You have nothing to lose by sending it to cudak888 to test his frame straightener except the cost of shipping -- one way if it doesn't work. If it were my frame, I'd go for it.
N.B. to cudak888, if you get the frame. Those braze-ons will make it difficult to get rid of the ripples in the tube. I'd un-braze them first, straighten the frame and then use e.g. Bicycle Research frame blocks to roll out any residual dents and ripples. |
That is a parts bike. Frame is toast.
|
Headtube is severely warped, and I didn't see that crease under the TT. Forget about this one - have a framebuilder torch out the Huret dropouts for you (sell them here or on eBay), then toss it.

Yup-fork is a goner too:(

Looks as if the crown is bent, not the steerer or blades. Cold setting may be an option.
Note that Raleigh never properly finished the crown around the bolt area of these things - the mounting surface is not flat, nor curved symmetrically. Virtually all sloping-crown Competitions you will find will have a bent front brake mounting post as a result; I filed a curved washer to offset the issue. Didn't particularly solve it: http://www.jaysmarine.com/raleigh_comp_nott_13.jpg http://www.jaysmarine.com/raleigh_comp_forkcrown.jpg If I might be quite honest, I wouldn't shed a tear over this frame. Not one tear. These Capella-lugged frames are often so badly built that it simply isn't funny. Some are decent, but few and far between. I often wonder if the Competitions ultimately existed solely for the purpose of providing us a plentiful supply of TA Pro 3 Vis cranksets and Huret Jubilee drivetrains. -Kurt |
I agree, it does look sort of unfinished-all stripped down it rings like a bell (lol). Think I'll make a wind chime out of it :)
|
One last question if you are all still out there......I have a peugeot 84 P6 frame/will the dr and crank fit it? Really don't care for the solida cranks that are on it.
|
The crank will fit, but the derailer won't. It's set up for a Huret hanger. There are adapters, but I haven't seen one in years.
That T.A. Professional 3 pin is my favorite vintage double. New stickers are available for the arms. I've been looking for one of those Competition forks for a long time. One showed up on eBay not long ago and it sold for $373! |
WOW! Guess they would be scarce or damaged (as mine is) So I need to find a frame that has the stop located in the same place? (thought since the pug was french/but eng thread) Otherwise hunt for an adapter......maybe I can rig one. Any models come to mind that have the stop in the right place? The hunt is on. Thanks GB

juls, contact David at southwest frameworks in Dallas. He can probably help with the fork if nothing else.

Thank you M

That's the eBay anomaly of the year. -Kurt |
Been getting a bunch of messages reguarding the rest of the bike. Thought I'd put it here that I'm goin to use the rest of it elsewhere. Apologies to the seekers.

Follow up on the Raleigh parts. The bb , crank and peds found a new home on this old Italvega Gran Turismo-since it didn't have a hanger; I was able to find a Huret hanger on ebay and make use of the jubilee as well. Fdr has broken cage/so used a shimano there. So in spirit the raleigh lives on....
