LOL at this thread. I have a suspicion it may be going to the same place as the Rivendell threads, though. Shabbat shalom.

Do we have tunnel vision from where most of us happen to live, or did C&V cycling not mature in other parts of the world to the point there would still be a healthy number of timeless* specimens floating around?
* Not sure how to categorize all the bikes that show up here.

People, enough with the Jewish stereotyping.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotypes_of_Jews
'[PDXaero] Jews are still stereotyped as greedy, nit-picky, stingy misers.... Common objects, phrases and traditions used to emphasize or ridicule Jewishness include bagels, playing violin, klezmer, circumcision, haggling and phrases like "Mazal Tov", "Shalom" and "Oy Vey".' (my emphases)
No offense meant to anyone who posted here, by the way; this is an atypical post for me; and I don't consider myself PC (in fact, I thought the jokes were pretty funny until the one about "get[ting] a better price somewhere"), but this is a dangerous road to go down.
I'm fairly certain I'll get attacked for being overly sensitive - I may even get a couple "this is the Internet/free speech/I say what I want" diatribes - but I'm also fairly sure I'm right on this one. Apologies in advance for killing the fun.

BTW isn't the seller assuming a bike is jewish because of its Israeli origin akin to calling an Italian frame Catholic?

How about hearing from a Jew who'd prefer not to be subjected to negative stereotypes? I'm one. I don't mind the ones about mothers laying on guilt, but I do mind the ones about being cheap or conniving. OK with you?

Another Jew who thought it was a stupid comment. Was it the most offensive thing in the world? No...but it was a dumb thing to say.
By the way...there is a general misunderstanding about "PC". It's censorship when speech is outlawed, or banned...or regulated by a Government agency. Telling people who say stupid things that they said something stupid isn't censorship. Every society has community standards...and that's all "PC" is...a standard of being decent towards one another. It means we as a society expect to be treated as individuals. Everyone complains about PC until it's their Ox getting gored.

Thanks to Tom and KonAaron Snake who got it exactly right. It's easy to write things in this sort of semi-anonymous public forum (without any intention to be offensive) that you would instinctively know not to do in the real world. Some of that may be due to confusion about who gets to make jokes: if you're a member of a minority, you can freely joke around about the characteristic stereotypes of your own minority--but only with other members of that group. Think of it as a big happy family gathered for a holiday meal--the members can laugh about how uncle Bob is really stingy, cousin Sue is a bad driver, etc. But you wouldn't joke that way if someone from outside the family was visiting, and if the visitor made those sorts of jokes it would be seen as pretty rude. KS is right--it's about decency, not censorship.

I do agree with you guys, it's nothing to joke about. I don't think PDXaero was aiming to offend anyone, he probably thought the joke was innocent enough. His un-PC moment has been corrected so let's assume that the point was taken and not rub it in too much.

Now about that bike...it looks like something an elephant would ride in the circus!
You know...after really looking at it...I'm not convinced the fork is bent. The guy might have just reversed it.

I'm pretty sure it's reversed AND bent. I mean, I know it's reversed, and I'm also pretty sure it's bent.

I'm definitely an amateur here...I don't feel confident saying it's bent when it's reversed and the angles are hard to establish.

Bike Forums might need to have a Bigotry and Racism Forum, if people want to continue this cr*p.

I have no problem with the seller. I don't know if he was making a joke, though I suspect so. I don't see any negative stereotypes in the ad. The "get a better price" elsewhere is borderline to me. Mostly, I was pointing out splytz1's comment. He said that wikipedia doesn't prove that any comment is offensive, and my point to him is that non-proof of existence is not proof of non-existence. I'd rather not be cast into a giant lot of people who are cheap or dishonest, which is a very negative stereotype.
Most of the jokes I've seen here have given me good giggles, especially from Chicago Al. I think I'll name him an honorary Jew. I just don't want anyone to tell me what should upset me or not.
Honestly, this thread has NOT troubled me. Offended would be a much too strong word!

In my original post, I may have reacted too strongly. I have not been terribly offended by this thread at all. It's pretty mild. But after those couple of comments (when I first posted), I saw it potentially going down a road, which, maybe thanks to the class and character of this community, it did not.
