I've seen it on ebay. A search for "stainless derailleur cable" or "stainless brake cable" will find you some there.

I assume that the stuff you'll find is coiled housing meant for friction shifting. In case someone reads this and wonders if this sort of housing exists for indexed shifting, the answer is, I don't know the answer. I guess it would have to be linear-wired housing with a second spiral-coil layer wrapped around it. I know I'm answering a question no one asked, but I'm wondering as I write this if there is such a thing. It would be heavier than most of us nerds would want, I suppose.

Velo Orange has a similar " Metallic Braid" style.

Been searching for the same thing and only found them in Ebay.....for way too much (at least the Campy ones I found at $25 bucks with cables).
Been searching in older Bike shops in the area, but they seem to be all out of it, except for a couple who thought they had one in the shop owner's junk drawers at home...never heard back from those guys about it..... Sure looks cool on a classic bike, specially if you have a nice derailleur to show off. I'll check out the other sources posted on this thread!

I'm curious as to what difference it would make whether the application was friction shifting versus index? The Campy stuff I linked to does have a nylon liner (IIRC, haven't had mine apart for awhile). It isn't flimsy.

Place an inquiry in the ISO/WTB thread and see what happens.

It will NOT work for indexed shifting.

I don't think you guys are recommending the same thing as in the picture.

The picture isn't of "housing" in the normal sense—there's no plastic outer and there's no lining. The housing pictured is literally just a tight stainless steel spring with ferrules at either end. When you take the cable out and pop it out of the cable stops, it springs back into its original state (straight spring).

I can't imagine that this works out to be a better (or even "as good") solution as modern housing—the biggest problem would be riding in weather, since when the spring bends, the tiny gaps between loops open which might spell rust if you didn't grease your cables—but it sure does look nice and I can appreciate the elegant simplicity of it. My Pro Tour came with one and I'm planning on leaving it on.

One justification for that non-covered steel braid housing is that it actually allows water to escape, rather than get trapped as would happen with conventional housing. I can say that I've seen many a rusted out bit of conventional housing at that junction, but I've never seen the wire braid stuff have a rust problem.

If you have trouble acquiring this piece PM me, I've got several. Happy to share.

Indexed shifting requires non-compressible housing (linear stands vs spiral wound). I don't think Campy shipped their stainless housing with a liner, but I found I could pull the liner out of certain brands of lined housing and slip it inside the Campy housings.

Charles Wahl 05-11-10 07:25 PM

I have about 25 feet of the stuff, only it's Suntour and not Campy (which is slightly larger diameter). I posted awhile back offering it at cost, and had only a couple takers. Neither one is lined, I know this for a fact. Some folks have used it as the front housing for barcon shifters, too.

I tried to fit the liner from some Jagwire housing into the Suntour housing, but there's no way that's gonna happen! Might be OK for the Campy, but my only section is on a bike, and I'm not removing it just to try; I believe JohnDThompson.

DiegoFrogs 05-11-10 07:44 PM

A bike I got had the Suntour stuff for the Barcon shift cables. I didn't like the way that the front sections scraped up the paint on the headtube, so I replaced those sections with plastic stuff. I kept the spiral stuff for the sections leading to the derailers. There was actually less friction than with plastic housings of the same length. Go figure!

Would you still happen to offer these housing? Thanks!

keirbw 04-27-15 02:20 AM

Anyone still have any of this housing available? I need some for 3 bikes.

Juha 04-27-15 03:45 AM

Welcome to BF, keirbw. This is an old thread. Did you already check the Velo Orange web site mentioned above?

I'll chime in:

Bought some from this guy a few months back. He'll probably re-list soon or just contact him. Lot cheaper than most you see on eBay.

Thanks for the answers. The Orange stuff is good as a modern vintage look, but the weave just doesn't look quite right for an authentic build.

Having used Spagetti Leg's ebay link I have found this in the UK, but also some cheaper in the US (just need to work out the postage penalty).

Did the one you received have the ferrule on it that fit in the hole in a Nuovo Record derailleur?
Some of these were designed for brakes, not their derailleurs.
I agree though, good price. If it's the one that fits.
