Mafac center pulls were great; so were the Mafic cantilevers on our tandem.
Italians made some cheap things too . . . remember the Campy Valentino stuff?

I still don't have any experience with Campagnolo calipers, but I've played around a bit with some of their levers. But in regards to sidepulls of any brand, I believe they can and do work very well, with some patience in adjusting them. I'm currently using some old Shimano Golden Arrow long reach calipers, and they friggin' rock, with modern pads. Plus they're just so cool-looking.
