7 speed drivetrain with 8 speed shifter?
I am seriously considering buying a 1980 gazelle champion mondiale "A" i found on craigslist. Its got mavic rims laced to 105 rims. it has been upgraded to 7 speed with old 90s shimano brifters. I really REALLY prefer Campy shifters to Shimano. I can't find campy 7 speed brifters so I was wondering does anybody know if I can run a campy 8 speed with a campy 7 speed derailleur and 7 speed freewheel? is the pull ratio too different? or could I just mess with the cable tension or something?
I am afraid to use an 8 speed freewheel drivetrain because I have heard about people breaking hubs because of the bearing placement. Is this really a common problem or would I probably be safe? (I will be doing some semi-casual racing (cat 5, maybe 4))

I've got a set of the shifters. The main problem is a compatible 7-sp insert, which work with some RD's and not too well with others.
If you're going to race with 8-sp shifters, rather than an 8-sp freewheel, you're probably better off finding an 8-sp Campy rear wheel (rat fink had on on the ISO/Trade thread).

Campy 8 speed shifters and 8 speed rear have same pull/spacing as 7 speed freewheels. So you just need shifter, rear der and then keep your 7 speed freewheels (or cassette). Just set the limit screw so you don't use the 8th position to shift into the spokes.

Works fine on the two bikes I coverted. I used modern Campy derailleurs.
It only works with the extra shift at the top or the bottom - but I can never remember which. I think the bottom. There are a ton of Ergo sets on eBay right now - a set of Chorus Ergos just sold for $160 last week so everyone and their mother had thrown them up. I got two Chorus sets for $105 and $80, for a couple points of reference.

thanks a lot guys
really appreciate it
I think I will just get the shifters and derailleur
i am on a strict budget (aka college student) and I dont race too seriously so I need to stretch my dollar, even if that means 7 speed freewheel instead of 10 or 11 speed freehub
