Paging bigbossman...is this a gem I've found locked to a tree? (Palo Alto content)

Okay I guess anybody can chime in, I just remember reading bbm rave about how amazing his Palo Alto is.

I was actually on a shakedown ride on my reborn 80's Cannondale and noticed a chrome fork crown shining under a street light so I turned around for a closer look and this is what I found. Is this thing special? It's my size, it's red and it looks pretty beat up. Had mostly Shimano 100 components on it but had campy and columbus decals...

Sorry the flash killed it but there is something panto'd into the chrome stay.

Would I be crazy to tape a note to the bike saying I want to buy it?? If so how much is this thing worth in it's Shimano 100/beat up paint job state?

That's a very nice looking bike, but just asking to be stolen by the way they have it locked up.

No, you wouldn't be crazy. In fact, I'd say wait for the owner to come by one day and then go casually over to him and make a proposition.

OK, maybe that last bit is a little extreme, but definitely tape a note to it. In our local market, I'd venture to say that $250? Is it RX-100? 105? Those are pretty good groups.

Judging by the Campy sticker and headset the parts were probably swapped at some point. It is pretty nice looking. It's worth a shot, that is how I got my Lotus.... sort of.

Note the braze-ons for rack/fenders. That's a touring model. Mine has the same seat lug/stay configuration, but a sloping fork crown. Also, mine has shifter bosses and recessed brake bolts/nuts - this one does not. Bear in mind - I'm far from an expert on these, just a very satisfied owner.

Mine is race geometry, and a fine all day rider. It is my favorite bike out of my 4 bike rotation - the other 3 being Cinelli SC, Pogliaghi, and Ciocc. That particular one looks pretty beat up. As reference, I paid $250 for a bare frame and fork, but it was almost without blemish. A nice all-original one sold last year or so for ~$1,450 on eBay, but it was near perfect. It's hard to put a price on them, as you don't see too many pop up. A 60cm touring model on eBay just sold for $260, and it looked to be in better condition than this one.

I guess it what I'm saying is that while I think these are very fine bikes and a joy to ride, this particular one look pretty beat and I'm not sure I'd blow a wad of cash on it unless I really wanted it. Maybe a couple of Benjamin's?

They were sold both as complete bikes and as just frame sets. You're probably right, but it would be hard to tell for sure.

+1, it brakes the ice without letting on that you know what it's really worth.

And yet it's still a compliment to the owner's taste.

I went back for a closer look. All RX100 components with Campy stickers in 3 different places, assuming it was built up w/Campy at some point in its life, who knows if it was sold like that originally. It's a beautiful bike but there is some rust coming through the paint on the top tube and a bunch of scratches/scuffs. Shame to leave a bike like this out in the weather.

I found this 1984 catalog, it looks to be the same as the red touring bike shown throughout the catalog and highlighted on page 25. Frame set sold for $340 back then.

I left a note...if I get a call I think I'll see what I can work out. I have too many bikes right now (actually trying to get rid of a few) but I could surely find a spot for this one if the owner will let it go for 2 bills.

IT could have been in a car crash 4 rings. That would explain the crime scene tape. The cops or EMT's locking it to something available. Chris
