I have a Rixe ten speed from the '60's, just a gaspipe bike, converted to a single speed. The Info I found suggests that Rixe bicycles were imported into the U.S. for a while in that time period by an outfit based in Lancaster, PA. I live near there, and occasionally see other Rixe bicycles. (Such as this https://lancaster.craigslist.org/bik/3722599424.html ((Crazy price!)) and this https://baltimore.craigslist.org/bid/3745919367.html ((no pics, but if you search the web you can find an image, and it Is pretty cool)) )
i also had a German three speed frame that was given to me and converted to a fixie "Torpedo" (not Torpado) it was cool, super slack angles, but had a funky german BB, different than english/italian/french

Unrelated story, but I remember this photograph of some Red Army soldiers in East Germany confiscating a German civilian's bicycle. A professor explained that the soldiers were none too pleased that the conquered had a higher standard of living than the conquerors.

Rickert, Bauer, and Durkopp come to mind, but yes, you don't see many C&V German bikes in the USA.

I think, what you mean is the old "Glockentretlager" usually used on touring bikes during the 50's. Here's a pic: https://www.need4.de/download/kurbel.jpg

They're really a pain in the a... if you need to take them off. Although special tools exist, most times you have to take a hammer and try to remove them (50 strokes left side, 50 strokes right side, etc....)

Biria. Although I'm given to understand that while Biria is a German company, the bikes are "Hecho en China".

1960s Sprinter with Torpedo 3 speed hub. Those drop bars are not original.

Someone asked me that the other day, "what are some nice German bikes" and I was like, not sure? They make great cars so you would think making bikes would be a given but I'm not seeing a ton of evidence to back this up.

well a Spin Intro with Lightweights, AX Lightness cranks and brakes is nothing to sneer at, is it. to be more C+V correct, take an FES road team time trial bike. to go further back, many a gold medal or title was won on Lüders, Rickert, Flema, Schauff, Rabeneick, Patria, Stollenwerk, Dürkopp, Textima or Diamant. Herkelmann, Marschall, Mittendorf, Altinger, Meral and many others can be considered KOF.

Isn't Enik a German brand? Did they make their own bikes or farm them out?

yep german. Think most of their frames came from italian oem. As is the Standert mentioned above, website itself says made in italy, painted in italy.

According to wiki, Enik stopped making own frames in the early 199ies. As long as they did make their own frames, supposedly each frame had the mark of the individual craftsman punced in (dont know where), maybe a way to tell made in germany Eniks apart from the others. Large company, huge output of all kinds of bikes, not exactly a boutique marque.
