New Book on Italian Racing bikes

I just preordered and will post a review when I get my hands on it:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/193..._ya_os_product

Anyone heard any buzz on this book?

My sense is that it could be a fun page flipper with some nice pics, or a great resource if well-researched. Fingers crossed.

I just pre-ordered one as well. Some of the books like this coming out of Italy can be sketchy, but hopefully there will at least be some great, detailed photos....

I don't understand why the translations aren't better - and this one appears to have some issues.

To be fair, Pogliaghi's reputation was made on track bikes and tandems. There are certainly quite a few folks who were left of the list - personally I see Gloria as a larger omission than Pogliaghi. Still, I'm willing to see the glass as half full at this point. I don't think the author is attempting to be complete or comprehensive.

They omitted one of the more famous (and colorful) Italian frame maestros, Giovanni Pelizzoli - a.k.a. "CIOCC".

Guess I'll have to pass.

For a book to cover all of the Italian builders, it would have to come in multiple volumes.

This book seems to have a nice smattering of many of the brands that are interesting to me.

Again, I'll give it a chance.

I liked what I saw on the pdf.

Correct - there are a ton of marques they left out, especially from a broader Italian perspective rather than a narrower American one: Dei, Galmozzi, Picchio, Branca, Grandis, Paletti, Marnati, Marastoni, Simonato, Benotto (pre-Mexico), Stucchi, Frejus, Zullo, etc, etc.. I think picking nits based on who didn't make the book kind of misses the point.

Then you'll have to simply wait.

I can't pass up these types of books.

I like reading about this Italian racing/brand lore, and this seems like a cheap thrill.

Winter in Minnesota provides many reading opportunities for books such as this one.

Considering that my wife has an early 1980s Colnago Super, I guess I'll just have to buy the book. (Like that's such a sacrifice, doncha know?)

You should see some of the stuff that gets translated from French . . .

Aah yes, "poker face" Ciocc ('choach'). Dig 'em. Wish I could find a nice SL/SP-tubed one in 60-61 cm. Anyone know of one FS?

I have spent the last 35 years using Japanese and German electron microscopes (SEM and TEM). Their manuals make for some interesting reading. I once read a Hitachi manual that clearly directed the use of a "sclewdliver" to remove a cover (I kid you not). And the German manuals always seemed to leave out verbs. Germans pay more attention to nounsmadeoutofalotofmodifiersstrungtogether than predicates.

The "author" is the same one who "wrote" the Campagnolo 75th anniversary book so I wouldn't wait with bated breath for the book. Looks like mere marketing fluff with no actual research going into the book (Rubino's reputation is thereby saved. Apparently it is hard to teach new tricks to old dogs). If you look, the book only includes brands still existing today and does not include any of the old companies of bygone eras. I'm going to pass on the book.

I wonder how much Rubino got paid by the companies represented to "write" this book.
