My New Old Bike - ALX Sport?

I suppose this bike could be called vintage/classic. We found it hiding in the basement but haven't figured out who it belonged to. I figured why not clean it up and make it rideable again. Its probably a low end bike though it seems to be in decent shape overall. I've never had a bike like this before so it'll be a fun learning experience.

I'll try to get a better side shot later.

The sticker says "ALX Sport" however there doesn't seem to be much internet information about that name. I can't seem to find a model/serial number on it either. Does it look familiar to anyone?

Looks in nice shape and if you have fun working on it all the better.

Be careful though...many of the addictions you see here started much the same way...old bikes are IN-FECT-IOUS

The only mixte frames I've seen that have bent top tube-to-middle-stay bars are French. What are the derailers branded? What size wheels/tires does it have?

Cool looking 5 speed.

Looks like the panels are in nice shape, too.

Much of the grime is gone and a stamped number (near bottom of seat tube) has been revealed! 56672! Didn't help much for identification but at least its cleaner.

Here is a close up of the seat. No idea if it has a specific name or not. The side view looks weird.

The springy underside. Note the knot of wires on the left side of the pic. It seems like someone tried to tie the rivet to the seat frame. Is the covering supposed to be riveted to the frame? The opposing is free from the frame but maybe the mystery person flattened out the rivet end?

Lastly, the seat suffered some punishment. Is there any way to fill these holes or a way to make it look better?

Are there any other points about the seat that I should take a closer look at and is there a name for this type of seat?

Mattress saddle. Low end, lots of versions, not worth restoring, and very easily replaced.

When I saw the wires I thought maybe the bar was cracked or broken and someone tried to repair it. You can't really fix it, so toss it and use another one.

I think I made a mistake in that I should have said "grommet" instead of "rivet" in my previous post. Sorry about that, this is a new side of bicycles for me.

The bar (seat frame) is intact, its mostly that rivet/wire mess that I'm worried about but I will keep an eye out for another saddle. Thanks

Decent looking bike. I would guess low end French, back during the bike boom years they were shipping and selling a lot of bikes from a lot of small manufacturers in France. You could buy a single lot of bikes, specify the type and have them shipped to your shop. I had a Lucien Michard "tour" bike that no one has every heard of or seen since.

Simplex derailers and the shape of the top tubes leads me to think French.

I have a bike like that. It says Astra, and it's chartreuse. It's a wreck, so I don't have pictures of it. I was thinking of restoring it for this year's Velo Cheapo contest, because I think it could look very nice. I will eventually get it in working order, because ladies' bikes sell very well.
