Inner chainring spacers found! All hail McMaster-Carr!
I'd been looking for a long time for some 1mm thick inner chainring spacers to tweak a problematic chainline. I don't think they exist, though--Loose Screws doesn't have them, Wheels Manufacturing seems not to make them, Quality Bike Parts doesn't have 'em.... Sure, you can get 1 mm (and thinner) MIDDLE chainring spacers, but they're a sloppy fit on the inner chainring bolt, since there's no nut.
Anyway, I finally thought to check the McMaster-Carr site. Sure enough, in the "shims" section they have round 1 mm shims with an 8 mm inside diameter--matching the chainring bolt--and a 14 mm outside diameter, which is a little bigger than necessary but doesn't hurt anything. They're stainless steel, and a bag of 25 cost $6 and change--a little over ten bucks with shipping added. I've used five, now have a perfect chainline, and now have 20 spacers left for other projects. Life is good. |
Yeah, McMaster-Carr is awesome. I found a bolt to replace a super record seatpost bolt there...and have 22 left over :P

I bought some 3/32" stainless steel pop rivets from them that are perfect for head badges. I had to buy a box of 100, but they weren't expensive.

To give parts and hardware a sporting change to escape to the wild, I try to do all my bike work on a stand set up on fairly tall grass. |
You should add this along with the MMC part number to that "exceptional deal" thread...

Or did two of them fall through the cracks in your deck?

Shipping? You must live in the boonies. There's a McMaster Carr in most decent-sized cities. There's one just south of downtown here in Fort Worth.

Yes. Definitely.
I've never lived away from a major metro area. I sometimes forget that people do! I think the "smallest" city I've lived in was Troy, NY, which is not that big but when you consider the whole Albany-Schenectady-Troy region, it is a major metro area. |
they have a call center in portland but no store.
I have tried ever store in town and no one knows what these are other than bike shops http://www.mcmaster.com/param/images/stacers/92842a.gif also a good source for the hard to find sized band on your rollers, just check the PU o-rings |

Wow, were they really packed 23 to a bag? Or did two of them fall through the cracks in your deck?

Actually, I have a very nicely finished basement workshop with linoleum flooring. The box held 25, I used one and put one in my spares box.
Maybe it's lost in the grass over here at my place. |
