Bianchi vs Trek
I responded to a CL ad for someone looking for an Al 58cm road bike w/ 105 components. My Trek 1200 fits the bill perfectly so I emailed him and said the reason I'm getting rid of it is b/c I want something more touring oriented. He responded saying my Trek sounds perfect and he has a 1984 58cm Bianchi Randonneur that he would trade. I haven't seen it so I have no idea what it looks like (he says it is in great shape). Whadya think folks?

Take it! Go now!

take it... Randonneur was a Columbus Cromor frame build at a bike shop. The frame is better than your alloy frame and has Canti bosses, a rear rack boss and plenty of eyelets for fenders and racks. Look at the components (because those are bike store built). Your Trek has 600 or 105 index (I cannot remember) make sure that this is up to par (it is a pre index bike). Still the frame is a good deal compared to the Trek.

Excellent! I reread the email and he said it has suntour mountech components. I work the next few days so I hope everything goes well
|
Even though that rear Mountech has issues, I would jump all over this deal, assuming bikes are in comparable shape, no rust or defects. You can find an era correct Cyclone GT derailleur or similar pretty cheap on ebay that would work great on that bike!

a Randonneur? very nice find, that looks like a great bike for weekend touring and even commuting. these were specced with both front and rearracks so I hope they are still on the bike. I missed a chance at a very nice '83 out near Milwaukee last fall but I guess he wanted way more than the $300 I offered. (it was of course going to cost me another $75-100 for pack and ship)
"E" we normally agree on lots of things but I do not agree with the Cromor frame and what do you mean "Columbus Cromor frame build at a bike shop"? what are you refering to? then later when talking about the componenets you say "look at the components (because those are bike store built)"? what does this mean? were the Randonneurs all built from scratch in the local dealers store? I am pretty sure that the Randonneur was offered only as a frame and then it was built in the bike store. Sometimes at customer specs, sometimes by the dealer. At least in the mid 80s. And their frame was Cromor or Ishiwata something |
nice bike

I know... they are great touring bikes and you need the heavier frame for those. There was one on my local CL (for $200) and it did not last 5 minutes.

judging by the '84 catalog it appears to be offered both as a frame and a complete bike including F&R racks. the components are Dia Compe 960 brakes w/drilled levers, Mount-Tech F&R ders, Takagi onepeice triple crank. Aaya rims and Bianchi QR alloy hubs.
OH the frame is listed as Magalloy Double Butted still a great Bianchi and I am somewhat sorry I missed out on one but my Volpe certainly fills the same niche |

One piece crank as in Ashtabula? If so ugh.... I need to search for some pics

I'm going to look at the Bianchi tomorrow evening. He sent me a picture of the bike via text, it's white w/ blue graphics and he has both the front AND rear racks for the bike. This may be a dumb question but, should I expect some cash from him or just a quick hand shake a thank you and take off on my new bike? I'll update this tomorrow evening pending "inspection"
|
unless you stipulated cash + bike, you should not expect it.

Sounds like a great trade to me!
Stipulations aside, I can imagine a situation where the two bikes are obviously not in comparable condition, and one would balance the situation out with a little cash. I would bring some, just to be sure, and not mention it except as a last resort. |
