Building the SwissCross: Shimano/Campag compatibilty

I am building my Ritchey SwissCross atm. The SwissCross is a very light, very well made crossframe. Welded construction using Ritchey Logic tubing, Ritchey ends, bi plane fork and more Ritchey typical features. Mid 90s era. Frame built by the little Toyo shop in Japan. The particular frame is previously owned by Rabo pro Koos Moerenhout.

I am considering two setup options: Ultegra vs mainly Campag. I am wondering whether this would be a possible option:

- Shimano 7s indexed bar cons
- Shimano 7s HG cassette
- Campagnolo Veloce rear mech >> like this one

Of course everyting will work fine in friction mode, but can I expect proper function in Index mode too???

No direct experience, but I would be very suprised if a campy derailler happened to index with shimano shifters. I would strongly suspect that the deraillers have slightly different geometry so need slightly different cable pull to shift between gears that is accomindated by the matched shifter mechanism.

If you're using a Shimano spaced rear cluster with Shimano shifters, maybe. You might end up playing with different Campagnolo rear dérailleurs to find the ones that take up the same amount of cable as a Shimano. Given the three possible variants (cluster spacing, lever pull, dérailleur movement), I'd say the RD will be the (relatively) least of your problems.

Make it easy on yourself and keep it all Shimano.

I haven't done this exact combination, but in general there's no reason why it won't work:
The RD in this scenario is just a dumb tool (sorry Campy!) that takes its orders from the shifter and does the work of moving that specified distance to move the chain on the cassette...what's important is that the shifters and cassette are compatible (which yours are).
Even there, you can often mix/match things that wouldn't work if going "by the book". I have used Shimano shifters and RDs with Campy cassettes and gotten very good results. And there are helpful accessories like spacer kits for the cassettes and a cable-pulley-thing for the RD that allows more Campy-Shimano interplay.
YRMV.
