Happy Yellow RB-1 -Pics for RT
Another day; another bike. ;-)
Here's a nice example of a 1993 Bridgestone RB-1. One thousand were produced. Everybody knows the story.
No matter what you think of Grant Peterson, his vision produced a few bikes which became legend. And this is certainly one of them. As Japanese C&V bikes continue to gain reputational parity with other worldly bikes there can little doubt that the RB-1 will continue to "shine" its light on the evolution.
This one I picked up locally about 2 years ago, as its value arc was still low on the horizon, especially for my town.
This is 57.5 cm ctt seat tube (56 ctc), full (and lovely) Tricolor Shimano 600/Ultegra group. The Mavic rims are replacements by a previous owner. It came with Tricolor hubs and Ritchey Comp rims; I'll be looking for them for a return to originality. Scott bars are replacements for the original Cinelli, I believe. And, obviously, the tires. Most everything else original is intact.
Note the improvment of the end treatment on the bar tape from inside to outside view of cockpit. I left the unimproved pic because it shows a nice view of the original Ritchey Force stem.
It's a bit small for me so I don't ride it. I keep it around because it brightens up the house. It brings a smile to the face of everyone who sees it.
Multiple clicks get big pics.
Cheers,
J

A yellow RB-1 in 600 tricolor apparel.
Someone must have stolen my "must have" bike list.
Thank goodness there's no treatment for this illness...
And....
"nice example" ??
you are too modest.

That's the nicest example I've seen.
I've had two. One I raced, one I made a buck or two.
Both of them are still alive and well in the Twin Cities.
....and yes, I still smile when I see them.
P.S. When will someone wake up and clone the RB-1 and XO-1.
There are variations of these, but I would like to see nearly identical models. Silly dream, but I know more than a few folks that would cough up the cash.
They are very classy, stylish machines, no doubt.

The RB-1 had pretty close geometry to Italian racing bikes, Ishiwata steel and awful for the time Suntour components. Methinks it was a 'clone' itself, albeit a tad lesser copy ot the originals (or even its contemporaty Italian breed). You should know. You ride De Rosas
The XO-1 was pretty unique, but since then, there have been lots of hybrids with 26 inch tires. Pop a moustache bar and you are done with a clone

I just loved the aggressive stance of the XO-1 though. It was a do everything bike.
Decent geometry, and I loved the pumpkin color.
Had one for a while and sold it. Not a terribly bright move.
The RB-1, well I raced one for two seasons. I didn't think once about Grant Peterson. I thought about moving up a class and that's about it. The bike was pretty inexpensive as well.
Oh, the RB-1 was pretty good at surviving crashes.

Your points are well taken and I suppose it's commonly known that GP intended the RB-1 to affordably replicate the ride of '60s(70s?) Colnago. Now - 20 years later - it has stood the test of time and presently stands above any dismissal as "clone" or "lesser copy" of anything.
1989/1990 RB-1s came with Suntour GPX group. I have never considered that group "awful" in performance. To the contrary - and indexing aside - I thought it a fine performer, modestly incorporating some of the better features of the premium Superbe Pro group. It could be called the early '90s equivalent of the mighty Cyclone.

Yeah, but "awful" and "1/5 as much"? My little GPX group would get its feelings hurt at the exaggeration if I let it read your comments.

The GPX gruppo, which is nicely supplemented with Superbe Pro hubs and headset, performs beautifully on my Montagner.
That has been a loaner bike at the house here, and folks love it.
They think the shifting has a positive, yet sturdy feel.
Durable, reliable, and easy to use, its good stuff.

Good eye, jbonamici. In the rebuild I ran short of the proper diameter ferrule and had to temporarily use a slightly ill-fitting step-down type to get some quick pics. That's long since been remedied.
Thanks.
