a dusty, dirty Grandis

a friend of mine from way back when was cleaning out his mini warehouse, and found his old tri-bike. he wrote me and asked, Do you want it?

Duh...

custom paint, all-Campy ?? whatever and the god awful-est tri-bar set up ever, but it looks like it will be supa dupa when all polished up. all i gotta do is pay the shipping....

Cut the check!

I'd love to get my hands on that bike.

A real find, and you obviously do a good job of keeping your friends happy.

I had similar good fortune last week. It was your turn.

One question though, does it fit?

Sorry I can't id the components. My iPhone won't enlarge the fotos.

that's the big if-- does it fit? i've ridden as small as a 60cm bike before. but he wants rid of it no matter what...so i will happily remove the campy stuff and the wheels if it doesn't ....the deal is done, just waiting for him to let me know the shipping amount...i'm psyched, Grandis was my first race bike, bought in the fall of 83.

The components are low end Victory, not worth shipping a whole bike IMHO. The frame on the other hand looks like a keeper if it fits.

"Not worth shipping"? Even considering the price of the bike (zero. nada. zip. zilch. nuffin'.)? Sheeeyoot - somebody offered me a bike like that for free, you're darn right I'd pay to ship the whole thang. Even with that tri-geek bar on it!

No, my point was that I would value the frame way above the components. The OP seemed to be more interested in the components. For example, I would not pay shipping for the whole bike if the frame were damaged.

Ah. The frame looks to be in OK shape from the pics. I wouln't pay a bike's worth of shipping if the frame were toast, either. (And there's also the chance that it's a Columbus Aelle or TreTubi frame - many of the big names were doing those back then to get into the mid-range market. Not as nice as all-SL/SLX, but worthwhile anyway.)

my friend asked if i'd like his 'all campy grandis'....he didn't recall too much about it. i come from the days of nuovo and super record being all that at least i knew about in the campagnolo line. victory, chorus, etc i don't know from....all campy sounded good to me. and as pointed out, the frame is of far more interest to me than the components, but i had thought 'how could i go wrong with an italian frame and campy gear?'

but i'll willingly pay the shipping just to satisfy my curiosity about it, and deal with problems/surprises when they get here. i don't look at bikes as a way to make money. just pure recreation...

That is going to be a fast, fun bike! The parts are not that enticing. To me, the Victory stuff just looks clunky and heavy (I have some, so I know it's fine, but aesthetically...)

That bike is COMPLETELY worth shipping...sell the parts for whatever you can get and outfit it in something more appropriate. I bought a Grandis for my fiancee and it was absolutely stunning...also much better paint than most of the Italians I've seen. I can't comment much on the ride since it was far too small for me, but the person we sold it to claims to love it. She got a Lemond that fit her better and had STI.

Don't have much to add about Grandis, but I do have an Internet friend who went out of his way to restore his Gazelle period correct w a complete Victory group, mint and/or NOS parts. Wasn't any cheaper than trying for something top shelf of the era, but he loves the aesthetics of thit particular group.

To each their own. I wonder if 11 speed Athena will be looked down on by C&V'ers 30 years from now?

I do not understand this what is so bad about Victory? everyone touts how great C-Record and Chorus was but Victory was junk? I just don't get it. it may not shift as smooth as Superbe but neither did SR or C-Rec.

you can send the Victory stuff to me I'll pay the shipping.

OH the one bad point about Victory/Triomphe was the seemingly "one size fits some" 170 cranks.

And the unique BCD chainrings... The group shifts no better than NR yet the finish looks cheap, so I would rather have mid-range Suntour which looks at least as nice and works much better.

+1 The cranks, brake calipers and seatpost, if they clean up well and are free of scratches and oxidation could probably sell for between $100-$150, maybe more. I happen to like the look of the Victory crank (which has a pretty nice finish).

Nice score!

Oh, and the bottom bracket if in excellent shape probably another $50.

Just home from Oak Cliff Bicycle Company- pix of the Grandis

first ride this AM-- i had to force myself off the bike. this frame is a straight up criterium frame with super steep head tube/fork rake, high BB and tight rear end. it is also smooth yet tight in that un-mistakeable Italian way.

i've never used Victory before, but it polished up nicely. some trouble with chain skate in the middle of the freewheel-- is this down to lever tension or...? i have no problems with any of the componentry, and for now plan to leave it the way it is.

my friend who gave it to me took delivery of it in gloss black w/yellow decals from Branford bikes and almost immediately turned it around for this custom paint job. it has totally grown on me....

Not much to add but wanted to say nice bike. I love my Grandis to death. Every time I'm done with a ride I find myself saying "I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy!" S

OK, so let's see La Traviata's Grandis...and could someone comment on correcting chain skate? is it simply a matter of lever tension on the shifters...

I'm not sure if I deleted the links to these photos, and I can;t see the photos at work either way...so this might not work:

It's a shame. I'd put you in the will to get the Serotta, I suppose I'll just have to remove you. I can't have you riding clunky and heavy components, you'd think poorly of me.

I'll run down to the lawyer this afternoon and get it changed, don't worry.

PS Shrink, that Grandis rocks! Great find.
