Are 7 speed Maillard/Spidel FWs really hard to find??
I'd like my next bike build to be a seven speed and the frames I would be looking for would most likely be mid to late 80's French and have 126mm spacing so I'm looking at a narrow 7 speed cluster for my next project which leads me naturally to a Maillard/ Spidel rear freeaheel cluster.
Last year, I was able to locate an NOS 7 speed Maillard Spidel super compact 7 speed freewheel at eBay and a shortly after, a matching Sedis SL narrow chain. but since then I cannot find both of them at all. I'm now suspecting that they did not make too many of the narrow seven speed FWs. Is that the case? I have been able to find some seven speed FWs made by Sachs with the Uniglide-like angled cog teeth, which might relate to a proprietary indexed derailleur system by Sachs/Huret, but are they narrow enough to work with 126 mm spacing too? and do I have to have a Sachs/Huret indexed derrailleur for it to shift well? Please advise....
Really trying to avoid going the Sachs/Huret direction as I am not really into those two brands.
