Collectible Desirability of Campy Crankset

I have the (late)80's Super Rec crankset that has no fluting on the arms. I've tried looking for completed auctions on Fleabay, to get a bead on its demand, but haven't seen any blow by.

Are these not as 'classy' as the fluted SRs?

I know the 50th Anniversary cranks were unfluted, and IIRC, had an engraved script logo. Didn't know they made any other unfluted ones.

They definitely are not as sought after as the fluted version. I had to relist mine several times. Here it is

A late '80s, non-fluted Record arm sold on eBay just a few days ago. I've yet to see anyone specify the variant in an item description.

Looks like I did well with mine after all. What is nice with these is that they are reinforced at the typical stress point.

I buy them whenever I come across them as they are the best ones to have pantographed... They usually sell for less than the regular ones. I think that Mainducoyote walked away with a very good price at $140...

You have to really look for them, two years ago I found a set and placed a bid late, crankset less BB for $70. essentially unused. I have seen others go for more one set went for near $200. which got my hopes up, but I have not seen it repeated. I recently saw a set with just a buy-it-now listing for a silly price, no idea if someone really needs it that much.

One never knows though, a guy who was 25 years old in the late 80's might now be thinking about recreating that long lost race bike now... there is hope.

Thing is, I usually buy my Campag Records locally, or here on BF. Either way, I usually get a much better deal than anything on eBay (hence why I didn't go for the lone 172.5, which - ironically enough - went cheap. Probably because I didn't bid on it), but the fact remains that the fluted variants are a dime a dozen, by comparison.

As mentioned already, if you want to still hammer out some hard miles on a classic Record crank, this is the safest one of them. Personally I think they are very nice. Kinda go well together with the slightly younger, and also rare, unfluted seat post.

I have both together on a bike.

Paid 120 for this:

Jan, correct me if I am wrong, but yours have engraved shield logos, correct? Both of the eBay examples have laser etched shields. Looks as if there are two variants within this already unusual variant in itself. Mainducoyote's are date-coded 22 (1986) on the drive side; 11 for the left. I wonder what the orphaned RH example is dated - looks like 11. What's the code on yours, Jan?

I see a dustcap variant as well - yours has the traditional ring-type Brev.'s (as opposed to Patent).

-Kurt

P.S.: Mainducoyote - your set has significant additional bragging rights. I spy a 41t Nuovo Record chainring. Those things are harder to find than NOS 151 Record road rings; what's more, the spider arms on your crankset are factory stepped to provide the additional chain plate clearance necessary - look closely at the lower left edge of this picture:

Looks as if the late '86 cranks were revised to meet Campagnolo's system-wide change from (edit) stamped to laser etched for '87.

So tycoune is you. I like the image work on your auctions, excellent. I do the same thing using a tripod, natural lighting, macro and an abundance of self hosted pics.

Almost bought the Campy wheels w the blue rims.

I am pretty sure the "engraved" versions are stamped and the "annodized" versions are laser etched. Faster and cheaper than an anno mask.

Yipes. That's a lot of multi-color-panto!

Jan - I'm actually deciding between this crank (mine is the screened, not etched, shield), and a C-Rec for my new Gazelle, which I got from a dude out West. It's going to be an 8sp Campy build, so the C-Rec would go a little better with the rest of the parts I've got, and it's a dang handsome crank. Of course, so is the SR.

My new bike has a set in virtualy new condition. The ad said they were C-Record with laser etching. I'm guessing the ad was wrong and they're really Super Record?

They're run of the mill Record, just it's latest incarnation. It has been argued that - unlike its predecessor - it is uniquely Super Record, for (supposedly) this arm variant came bundled with SR only.

Where would you go to have your cranks pantographed? Am I correct in understanding that you mean have the logo re-applied? I wasn't aware this could be done. I have considered "khatfull-ing" a set of cranks, but I haven't because I don't want to loose the laser-etched logo.

Beauties though, aren't they?

I am looking for a Super Record or Record crankset for my Zullo Sprint.

The bike came to me with a zany mix of Gran Sport, Shimano 600, and a little Dia Compe thrown in as well.

I am clearing the deck on the bike with a Super Record gruppo and a new wheelset.

Going to look at a complete SR gruppo in Minneapolis this afternoon.

Miamijim, have we seen pics yet of this new find?

Any idea which version I have? My logo is lazer etched. IIRC, I snagged this set for $40. I outfitted them with a TA triplizer and matching TA rings.
