Need help removing broken shift lever from frame - I think...
I got this frame recently and it appears to have part of a shift lever stuck on the downtube boss. I've tried pulling it off with different pliers to no avail. I'm worried about damaging the frame, as you can see there is one little nick in the paint...I gave up after slipping off and causing that because I don't want to cause any more damage.
Anybody else run into this before? Any suggestions? http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/w...s/IMG_0416.jpg I just posted a thread about this same bike in the appraisal section if you want to see more pics. |
I recommend spraying some PB Blaster overnight, should come off easily with some visegrips. If not, you can use a Dremel cutting wheel to split it. Tape some masking tape around it to protect the frame.

It looks as though there is an overhang around the lever boss. If there is, dose it with PB Blaster or Plus Gas then carefully tap it off using a long screwdriver as a drift with a hammer, using firm, sharp blows - from behind (the right side of the frame. If that doesn't work, Dremel away carefully - wrap a damp cloth around the frame to protect the paint from hot abrasive wheel debris?

that is the backing plate for Shimano DT shifters. DO NOT cut it they are kind of rare. a little wd40 and let it sit overnight and carefully work it off. use a small screwdriver.
you only got one with the frame? btw that is a great color |
If you must destroy the backing plate (Bianchigirll nailed it, FYI), get a pair of vise grips, very lightly grip the plate on the top and bottom, and pull out towards you. Do NOT put the slightest additional pressure on it, or else you'll crimp it onto the boss and jam it further. Rocking the plate clockwise and counterclockwise will help.

Vise grips set just tight enough to secure it, and gentle, persistent wiggling.

Surprised you are having a problem. I just pulled a set of what looks to be the same year Dave Scott and they came right off. Maybe when they were installed the pant was not fully cured and they go glued on. Try grabbing them and wiggling the back and forth while trying to turn them back and forth.

you only got one with the frame? btw that is a great color I only got one with the frame. The bike is getting fit with STI shifters so I don't need the backing plate anyway. Also, this one that is stuck on there was partially damaged already from somebody trying to remove it. I'll soak it with PB or something similar and try again tomorrow with some vise grips. Thanks guys (and gal). |
