Best floor pump ?

Every time I go out riding, the drill includes airing up the tires on whichever steed I’ve chosen for that day.

The only problem is that my “brand X” floor pump is not especially cooperative: It’s still relatively new, but by the time I get the tires up to 90psi, I’ve already had my work-out.

I know there are lots of bad ones, but what floor pump(s) have WORKED WELL for you ?

I would value the opinions of our C&V members.

Sette tripod floor pump sold at pricepoint. But I haven't seen them there for a while. I also have picked up several floor pumps with flips. But I tend to pass them on with higher end bikes.

EjustE 06-28-10 12:33 PM

I don't use a floor pump for this. I use a portable air compressor that plugs into the lighter socket of my car. I always have a couple of Presta to Schrader valve adaptors and it works like a dream.

auchencrow 06-28-10 01:43 PM

BTW, I meant to post this question to the main forum - not appraisals.

(If a Mod could be so kind as to move this thread...)

E -
This sounds like good way to go except one of the reasons I bought my existing pump was to get away from constantly screwing and unscrewing the little Schrader to Presta adapters. (My old pump was a Schrader only head - not high end I know - but neither is my new one)

wrk101 -
I just googled where to buy Sette pumps, but came up empty. I suspect Price point had been their only outlet.
Apparently they were/are into MTBs - this probably is a good thing when it comes to pumps because they take so long to air up.

Maybe not the best, but I have a Blackburn with Presta/Schraeder head on it that I like. Will do my road tires (100+) quite easily, and the tires on my wife's Spec. Crossroads fill up easily as well. Mine is probabl 10 years old (probably bought at Performance), so not sure how their current models compare. Mine was not expensive, probably $30 or less, but I don't recall.

+1 - I love my cheapie Blackburn floor pump.

The old 2-hole nozzle (1 for Schrader, 1 for Presta) kind of sucked as it always blasted air through the wrong hole. However, it "broke" one day when I was frustrated at trying to get it to inflate a tire rather than clean my driveway with compressed air... anyhow, I found out at the LBS that I could buy a replacement for it, and it's their new design that actually works. It's a single hole that changes shape as you flip the lever up. One click for Schrader, two clicks for Presta. Works like a champ.

A new basic Blackburn floor pump with gauge can be had for around $30, and it has the new nozzle.

I have a Silca track pump. Don't know if it's the super or standard, but it works well. It moves some air. Main function is by a relaceable greased leather cup that costs about $4.00 to fix every ten years or so.

mkeller234 06-29-10 12:57 AM

I have the basic Park pump and it has worked without any issues.

Maddox 06-29-10 01:00 AM

I use a Bontrager floor pump I overpaid for at the LBS. It was overpriced, but it works perfectly, and the gauge is accurate.

nickkoto 06-29-10 01:51 AM

I have a Serfas FP-50 that I got at REI for about $22.

It doesn't necessary feel like it will last forever (way too much plastic), but it hasn't given me any issues, it seems to pump pretty effortlessly, and it has a dual presta/schrader head.

auchencrow 06-29-10 04:36 AM

I've seen two votes for the Blackburn - these range from $30 for the basic model to $60 for the Air Tower model on Amazon. They receive some mixed reviews there.

While I was visiting I searched on the highest customer rated and came up with the Lezyne Alloy Floor Drive Bicycle Floor Pump. Pretty pricey though. . . Anyone have experience with these?

SJX426 06-29-10 06:50 AM

I don't have experience with the Lezyne though I have read good things about them. I have this ones: http://www.amazon.com/Silca-Terra-Bi...3&sr=1-2-spell and get to 120 with 20 pumps on a sew up. I was looking for something that went more than 120 and this one was purchased for less than $50 new. I was lucky on the price and am satisfied.

Cool Steel 06-29-10 06:56 AM

You mean BEST floor pump?
No question - the "SKS Rennkompressor". Unequaled.
(And take the presta head.)

Grand Bois 06-29-10 06:57 AM

Medai Top Super. Mine is about 35 years old and it still works great.

Noah Scape 06-29-10 07:11 AM

I picked up one of these Lezyne pumps last fall. I am very impressed with the quality and function.

Scooper 06-29-10 07:30 AM

I've had good luck (never any problems) with my Topeak Joe Blow Sport. The TwinHead™ works with Presta and Schrader valves, and it pumps to 160 psi.

KonAaron Snake 06-29-10 07:30 AM

I use a Specialized HP floor pump and it's notably better than the Park pumps...it fits to the valve more firmly and more easily, it pumps with less effort and more quickly, it's more durable and I love the one head for either valve type feature. It's easily the best pump I've owned.

auchencrow 06-29-10 07:57 AM

Cool Steel - that sks is a certainly a piece of art there but MAJORLY expensive IMO!
Grand Bois - can't find the Medai for sale anywhere. (Very highly recommended if you can find one though)
SJA426 - That's the 2nd time we've seen Silca mentioned here. Probably worth a 2nd look.
Noah Scape - That Lezyne is nice looking and recommended too.
Scooper - that Joe Blow sport is priced right and functional
Pars - The Blackburn has won some endorsements here and is competitively priced.

It seems like there are so many good pumps to choose from. (So how did I end up buying a POC?)
Anyway, with any one of the pumps listed, I am certain to do better than my Brand X. Thanks all!

Ex Pres 06-29-10 08:11 AM

I have a Nashbar blue (paid $15) that I've used to pump tubulars up to 150 psi (just to try 'em out), and a Specialized that I think sells for about $30 in stores. Both take little effort to fill a tire. If I had to choose one the Specialized is probably better, but the Nashbar came with a dual presta/schrader head, if that's a need.

i recently found this exact pump on the curb next door to my house. the owner was throwing it away because the hose was cracked. i bought a new hose for $2.50. it's a good pump, and the built-in gauge seems accurate.

I have the same pump and it worked great until the hose went and I haven't located one yet, but haven't put much effort into looking for one except locally. I just use my shop compressor at the moment or my bell pump which for a cheap pump works good.

SJX426 06-29-10 08:27 AM

This is the third mention of Silca! Hey I have used a few different pumps over the last 40+ years but not all. I'll bet that a lot of them are equivalent. I use my air compressor (max 110psi) for my schrader valves. Because my main bike is presta equiped (tubulars), I wanted something that would approach 200PSI capability. I figured that if it could get to 200, then getting to 120 or 160 shouldn't be too much effort. The plus is the presta head. It is quick, smooth, seals great and removes easily, one of the best I have used.

I suggest you think about what your requirements are, not only in the need to add air to a tire but the variety and easy. I don't like having to spend too much time adding air to any tire. Quick and easy is the ticket with what I have. The compressor supports a number of other efforts as well so it is a plus for me.

BTW: I have two Silca frame pumps, a number of the mini pumps and one other frame pump that weights a ton compared to the Silca. (plus it is Italian!)

Pars 06-29-10 08:36 AM

Hard to compete with a compressor. My Blackburn must be 10-15 years old, and the head is shaped like a "T" with Presta on one side and Schraeder on the other. You rotate a lever on the chuck barrel toward the side you are using to lock it on the valve. The pump body and base is all metal. It is faster than the Silca track pump I have, and was cheap. I've never tried most of the other pumps mentioned, but happened to be in a Performance store and spotted it and bought it on impulse, mainly for the dual head for the kid's bikes.

canopus 06-29-10 08:58 AM

Back in the 80's Zefal made a dual chamber pump that pumped on the up and down stroke (I guess thats the Alaskan Graph now). I loved that pump but sold in a fit of stupidity when I needed some money and really miss it. Last year I bought a Serfas FP-200 and have been really happy with it. Got a good deal on it @ around 20-25.

khatfull 06-29-10 09:28 AM

I have a Specialized Air Tool Pro, seems to work just fine and only take a few pumps to top off from 60-70 to 100-120.
