Need Help IdentifyingRoad Bike Make
 

Greetings everyone. I just bought a road bike earlier today and it seems to be in good shape. I plan to clean it and replace the tube and tire. I've looked all over the frame Th and I can't find anything that would identify the manufacturer or make. How can I go about finding that out? The only thing I was able to identify is that it was made in Canada... I'm guessing I can use the serial number, however after searching all over online I can't seem to find anything based on the serial number...

Any help would be appreciated.

CCM was the big Canadian builder. Raleigh also built some models in Canada.

A little more info and a few pictures (worth 1000 words each, don't you know!) would help a great deal.

It's an 80's cheapie. Considering the low quality of the bike, it's probably not worth knowing the brand. The big stickers on the headtube and seattube are likely covering up the originals that would give you your answer. Warm them up with a hair dryer and peel them off if you like. I'd guess it's a LeCircuit or some department store brand like that.

+1 Cheapie, regardless of brand. Department store "quality". Really at that point, a 2010 department store bike is a lot better than a 1980s department store bike.

I don't know how true that is. (Sorry, I'm sure this discussion has been had a few dozen times) Maybe for the first few months it's true. I see Free Spirits on the road that are 30 years old (not time capsule bikes either) in MUCH better shape than 3 or 4 year old Magnas and Schwinns. I think those heavy old steel wheel department store bikes leave a lot to be desired, but are good cheap transportation and make nice city bikes. I would advise anybody to buy a $100 Free Spirit (pending condition) over a brand new $100 Schwinn at XMart any day of the week.

hmm... Thanks for the advice. Here is the deal... I needed a new wheel for the fuji road bike that I had. So I figured instead of buying a new wheel and getting it installed I would buy this bike for $40. :) It looked nice but I've been cleaning and tuning it before I test it to see how it rides. Now thought I may stick to the fuji after putting the wheels on this bike on it. So could I please get reviews/opinions on the following two bikes I also own:

Koga Miyata Ridge Runner (mountain bike) - it seems to be a very good quality 80's mountain bike... I'm not sure though
Fuji S10-S (road bike)


Also, I am new to the whole cycling thing and find that I am enjoying it not just for commuting, but also for fitness. I do not want to spend and arm and a leg on those fancy modern bikes. Everyone I ask suggests getting a good quality used 80's bike of of craigslist or some place like that. What kind of bikes/brands should I be looking for if I want a bike I can use for fitness (which I guess means long rides on flat scenic routes :))?

a search will give you all your answers. you need to put in the time to figure out what it's all about.

all of us have preferences, and for the most part, they all vary. we all just want a bike that is fun to ride and feels good while riding. that's pretty much it.

you now have 3 bikes. ride them all. mix/match/swap as much as you want. you'll find out what things you like, and you can go from there.
