Yep, just bent the left arm of my 49D crankset. Thought I would try a set of MKS touring pedals on the Super Course for fun. Homeward bound on a beautiful summer morning and BAMN!, thats all it took. I'll try to post pictures because this post is obviously meaningless without them. The arm is visibly twisted.

In the mean time, any kind souls with a stray 170 49D crank arm lying around please let me know. I'll post in the 'looking for' area as well.

Another Super Course that won the lottery! My original intent for the build was to use the frame as a place holder until something better came along, but it rides so nice I'm no longer looking for an upgrade.

The first place to check for vintage parts is eBay. I see single 49D arms on there fairly often. There's none today, though.

Somebody tell him how to post big pictures. I only know how to do it using Webshots. I hate small pictures!

If you already have a gmail account you can do the same thing with Picasa since you already have a google account. Just another option that might not require remembering another set of id and password.

My observation is that spare left-hand Stronglight 49D crank arms are hard to find and go for crazy money. Heck, I could use one, too!

I didn't say anything about them being cheap. Here's a pair, but you won't get them for $35. I've got some rings that need arms, so I'm always looking for a set at a decent price. I've been looking for a very long time.

Grand Bois I'm pretty confident it's the crank arm, it's more obvious in person, and you can feel the twist.

I have Nervar crankarm that will serve as a temporary replacement, although I hate mismatched cranks!

When I have a part I need that is difficult to get I put lines in the water anywhere roughly relevant, plus check ebay. I frequent a couple different bike boards and will put a "WTB" up in all of them. I'd basically put up a WTB at this site, plus any other road bike site you visit that will allow it. There's also ebay and local bike shops. Sometimes if you can find an older shop they still have old parts in the basement/back that are just sitting. If it's any consolation I've ridden even more bent astabulas than that, because they were a proprietary thread. I eventually replaced as needed.

IMHO I think the Nervar crank arms look really good with the T.A. chainrings (assuming you have both Nervar arms?)

I'd clamp it in a bench vise, grab my 12" adjustable, and try to bend/twist it back to straightness again. I know it sounds sketchy, but I've had good success doing it.

What he said. I'd add a little masking tape to the jaws of the wrench and the vice. No reason to make it ugly too. That's the nice thing about forged metal.

I am a big proponent of Super Courses, and have been known to say that they're "to die for" - but I don't mean literally...

So BE CAREFUL around corners and curbs! - A pedal strike can land you in traffic - never mind a bent crank!

I hadn't thought of that. It does sound better than being at the mercy of the ebay market. Nothing like bidding against almost everyone on the planet who's looking for a similar crank.

So no worries about 'molecular damage'?

Crank arm fractures can be pretty ugly...

I do have the right Nervar arm but the pedal threads are thoroughly trashed.

I had a pedal strike on the (basically vacant) MUP on the way home last week. Knocked me way off my cornering line so that I left the path and reacquired it on the apron of the bridge that came immediatley after the corner I was taking. That was a nice abrupt 2" upward step back onto concrete from the field; the apron ended with the end of the bridge and I was back in the rough again; I somehow managed to manoeuver back onto the path without wiping out. That was a lucky escape, and needless to say, I'm being more careful in corners after that escapade. Amazingly, other than the scrape on the pedal, there seems to be no other damage. I had visions of hammered rims, not to mention bent fork, bruised tires and pinched tubes, but everything seems to be OK. I'll make a point of checking the pedal spindle and crank arm for straightness, which didn't occur to me before, but I didn't feel anything unusual during subsequent riding.
