I paid ~$15 for the Sunlite rear rack (that I modded into a front rack, see a few posts up) at Nashbar before they became NLA. Performace Bike frequently has their Transit rear rack on sale for $20 or less. For a new project I also purchased a Nashbar front rack for 15 bux that is designed to mount on canti bosses. I haven't mounted the rack yet; the bike in question doesn't have canti bosses; my plan is to get the job done with P-clamps. There is a matching pannier set from Nashbar for this particular rack that I purchased also.

1983 Raleigh International, with Pletscher Athlete front rack and Wald basket. It's my daily commuter. Typically the basket just carries my Banjo Bros bag, but it's a perfect fit.http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4074/...76f3d407_b.jpg

'85 Schwinn Sierra with Jandd Expedition racks. This is my first install on this bike where I moved the rack forward a bit to keep it from hitting the downtube when the handlebarss flop over (you can see the Y-connectords at the mid-fork mounts). I have since mounted it as it was intended:

I also have a '75 Romic with a Nitto/Rivendell "Mark's Rack" and an '86 Lotus Odyssey with both a Vetta low rider and a Nitto M-12. I can take pictures of their current set-up if you would like.

Just found this thread how are you all putting wooden slate's on your wald racks, I have been wanting to do that to mine.

southpawboston 12-12-12 06:25 PM

You can't really see it in this pic, but I fastened wooden slats onto a Wald basket by sandwiching the basket between the slats and smaller, shorter strips of wood below the basket. The wood slats lend some welcome reinforcement to a wobbly Wald basket!

Here is my setup and it matches your criteria: drop bars, fenders, connection to fork end braze-ons.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8065/8...de5121a1_b.jpg

This is a Nitto Mark's Rack. I used this because I have caliper brakes on this bike. I had to order the 42cm struts separately to reach the fork end braze-ons. I just love Nitto racks. The level of finish and precision craftsmanship are hard to beat. I like they are made of cro-mo, same as the bike frame. Yes, they are expensive but for me they're worth it.

Fenders and racks should be considered together. Here, I added a clip to the front end of the rack to stabilize the front of the fender. These are Honjo LePaon fenders and are extra long. Stabilizing the front of these fenders is almost a necessity.

Here is a top view of the rack.

I also think you should have a good idea what you plan to put on your rack when you are evaluating which rack to use. In this case, I decided to use a small rack top bag up front.

This bag is is a Sackville Trunksack. It fits perfectly on this rack. Another nice bag to consider is an Acorn Mini-Rando for a rack like this.

Here's a pic of a Schwinn front rack I salvaged off of an old cruiser. Cleaned it up, mounted it on my 3spd Schwinn Speedster. Good fit. Sorry I don't have a better pic online. The bike currently has a much better fitting front fender.

i love front racks and have owned the vo porteur, nitto minis, surly etc etc but i find them all kind of useless without a bag or basket and theres no way i'm dropping that much dough on a bag to hold 4 pounds no matter how good they look, so eventually all my front racks get hidden by baskets. oh well a basket in front is pretty classic anyway

Creme Brulee 12-14-12 01:24 AM

also, that front pletscher is really cool

I'm sorry for the bar tape, couldn't be helped, nothing to be done, move along, nothing to see here...

Copy that. My VO rack does the job just fine and looks pretty good to boot. However, you really can't tell how it looks because my Ozette Rando bag stays on front all the time - that's what makes the rack useful which is the whole point of having a rack of any kind in the first place. I like to carry stuff when I ride and this is a winning combo for me. YMMV.

VO Porteur rack on UO-8.

storckm 12-14-12 04:12 PM

I have the VO porteur rack with wide drops (48cm, I think). It works fine, although I have to make sure that tall and wide boxes fit between the brake levers.

Nice rack...

A couple-3 different Blackburns, Bike Friday's, flat pack.
Bruce Gordon Lowrider . Tubus Ergo (via Koga, with its Kickstand)
Pauls Comp Flat bed, Porteur.
And a black one-off made (91) by M.Steel/Joe Waugh in Newcastle that bolts to the brake posts,
made around the Clearances a Scott -Peterson SE front cantilever requires .

And a modified Brompton steel Bag support that functions like a Removable cargo rack.

Re N.3 , I note in the Bike Trade Press Wald is Making a Rack in the type of wide area but shallow height ,
just of that sort , but better than just cutting down the Newsboy baskets.

Here is my Wald 157 modified basket setup on my Electra cruiser. I was able to keep my mounting hardware stealth underneath and leave a nice unmolested wood surface on top.

Nice bikes here.

We've had a VO rack on the front of the tandem for a few years now. Best pic is this one, the bike resting after an 80 mile ride:

We run panniers and other stuff on it occasionally, and it carries the headlight:

On the topic of front racks, what rack options do I have if I have front rack mounts on my fork?
