Raleigh Experts needed.

I'm no stranger to Raleigh's, but this one has got me stumped. I'm guessing it's a International because of the color and markings, but the Lugs are definatly not Nervex and the brakes and cable guides are on the top and not the bottom that most Raleighs from that era came with. What's really got me stumped is the Head badge (note the ////// were it would normaly say were it was made).

Any guesses?

I'm pretty certain that is a 1982 Raleigh International Mk II. Oddball one-year model made (for the U.S. market) just when Huffy was taking over U.S. management of Raleigh. They were sold alongside the likewise one-off, dark blue 1982 Raleigh Competition Mk II, which bore no relationship to the so-called "Competition Mk II" (called so in the catalogs, never formally on the decal transfers) from 1973.

JunkyardBike has (had?) one of these. PM him to see if he has anything to add to this thread.

This would probably get more help if moved to C&V proper. Just start another thread in "What's it Worth" if you're trying to figure out whether it's a good deal, or similar.

My guess is an early 80's Raleigh Competition. Likely made in Japan with that head badge.

+1

There are several regular members there who REALLY are knowledgeable and won't have to guess .

Thanks for the move Zorro and all the good advice.

+1, made in Japan. I have a catalog from Michael's Cyclery in Iowa, 1985-ish, showing this bike (sold as a frameset). I'll bet it has Suntour dropouts - the catalog mentions the double eyelets on front dropouts and single on rear. Some C&V denizen actually has one of these, and I think I remember seeing it in the “Show us your touring bikes” thread.

Awesome info guy's! I probably wont buy it, just wanted to satisfy my own curiosity.

I have one of those frames hanging in the rafters. It is 531. I stripped and painted it, and was able to see the faint stamping in the tubing. They are pretty nice frames, mine felt a bit spongy compared to a Carlton built Competition GS that I had shortly after.

The chrome was nicer than the typical British chrome, too.

Thanks a bunch for the info guy's. One question before I go. What happend to the Bulgier.net site? I havent been there in a while and now it says Access Denied.

Charles Wahl 07-21-10 05:32 PM

There's a thread on this -- nobody knows but Mark Bulgier.
