CL ****blocked

Please pardon my french. This beautiful, beautiful Masi I found on CL with a Campagnolo C-Record groupset and delta brake calipers was going for $75. Apparently the dude just found it on his rental property.

Then some guy named John apparently emails the guy, tells him it's worth more, and suddenly the guy gets dollar signs in his eyes and raises the price by over a factor of 20.

ARGH! The fool didn't even know the beauty of what he had!!

Chombi 07-21-10 03:21 PM

Oh well, ........getting the chance to buy a Masi like that for crazy low prices is a long shot for anyone anyway. It was bound to happen that way as many are always looking for Masis out there, so he ws bound to find out.
You have a better chance of snagging something listed erroneously under a wrong or misspelled brand name.

C'est La Vie indeed! I will settle knowing that I've already had one great deal come through. Sometimes they only come once in a lifetime.

Seems he's listing a fair price now, but is his suggesting people should bid on it kosher on CL?

Ranman 07-21-10 03:28 PM

Sorry to hear about that but the seller says it's a 52 inch frame so it probably doesn't fit you. :)

I think technically, anything goes on CL. I've got great respect for people who honor the first price they name and the first person who responds, but I think a good number of people are a little less patient. And at the very least, there are quite a few "make me an offer" posts, which seems just like a silent auction.

Haha, that's true. I'm more curious to know how you know my frame size, Ranman .:wtf:

Old Fat Guy 07-21-10 03:44 PM

Nice of you to respect the fact that he didn't know what he had and were willing to pretty much steal it from him.

Poor you. I really feel bad for you.

Amani576 07-21-10 03:52 PM

I tend to put "make me an offer" in my C/L posts, but only because I'm not 100% set on my price. If somebody shows up with a reasonable offer, BAM, sold. Even if it was less money. I sold a light on C/L last week for $40, I had it listed for $50, but the dude who inquired about it worked about 6 miles from me, I drove over, exchanged money and bought some lunch.
But people who insist on making it a bidding war have issues. Some people, if they get the slightest little inkling that it's valuable flip out decide they want top dollar. I just don't get that. You put no value on it before, why's it different now that somebody thinks it is?
Meh... people.

I saw it listed at $75 and figured it was a troll

I'm still not convinced it's not

either way, you're out nothing

Concurred. I'm not always set on price either, so most of the times I'll just do as you did and add an OBO to my price, making clear. That's kind of what irks me in bidding wars, that there's no understanding of why the thing is worth something.

Point taken, though my friends and I each offered him more than he was asking for the bike (just not $1725 more...). Please, no sarcasm next time though, I get enough of that on the unfriendly non-BF side of the internet as it is.

Then don't title your post with an obscenity, and I'll temper the sarcasm.

Did you you offer him $800, or $200? The former is reasonable, the latter is still theft.

There is no "John"; he's messing with your head.

Isn't that what OBO means?

Point taken. I thought the star would be enough, but if not, I'll make sure to leave it out then.

I think OBO means more that you can underbid, as opposed to an auction, where you can forseeably keep raising the price.

+10 Typical Craigs List behavior. Many people selling on C/L are selling stuff because they need money now. When they find out what they have is worth a lot more than they thought, they often will raise the price.

Part of doing business on C/L. We are all OK when we snag outstanding deals, and we are all bummed when they disappear, or the terms change.

OP,

I was C-blocked recently as well by one of our own:

I agree that OBO usually translates to "Thats my price but feel free to offer me less".....but OBO does stand for Or Best Offer. To me, if I'm the seller, the Best offer is the highest....far be it from me to interrupt a bidding war between two bike nuts who both want my bike.

Thats like 2 girls arguing over who gets to take me home at the end of the night....it never happens and if it does I'm holding out for the best offer

Kuotient 07-21-10 05:18 PM

hahaha I totally saw that on CL today too...oh well =[

That sucks man. I think C-blocking may be a bit strong. Really, I just feel let down - had my hopes up - but in the end, it's the seller's right to do as he/she'd like after all.

I would make a crass remark here concerning a compromise involving both of them, but I think I've already maxed out my vulgar talk for the day.

phoebeisis 07-21-10 05:20 PM

So people leave $2000 bikes when they move out of $600/mo apts?
Yeah,I do that all the time.
This guy is just foolin' with a bunch of "greedy" flippers.

It could be even more nefarious that that - It's equally likely that it's hot. (Don't dismiss the idea of someone blatantly listing a stolen item on CL.)

That's possible, though this is one very very unique and easily identifiable stolen bike if that's true...
