C&V help with a difficult problem
Something is really bugging me and I am hoping my C&V friends can help me out with it. :(
Last night I came home from work and went immediately to the basement to work on the Team Miyata project I recently posted about. As I came down the basement stairs I heard noises coming from the rec room beside my shop, and when I cracked the door open, I saw my wife in flagrante delicto with the guy next door, a guy who I would have considered one of my best friends. Right there on top of the pool table. They didn't see me and I didn't know what to do so I crept away and went into the man cave. I spent all night just staring blankly at the stripped-down Miyata frame. Now my question: Should I update the drivetrain to 10sp STI or stick with a traditional DT setup? |
DT, definitely.
|
take her diamonds down to "pawn stars" and trade them for a new Super Record group. but otherwise stick with DT. I love it when someone looks at one of my DT bikes, points at the shifter and says "whats that?"
|
I say DT are the answer and a refelt of the pool table.
|
Sell the pool table, use the funds to pay for the STI upgrade.
|
*blinks* Damn...
Umm... I'd go STI, personally. I'm beginning not to enjoy DT's, though YMMV. -Gene- |
Shove an STI up yer neighbors bum...And use the DT shifters.
|
If we're not having our chains yanked here (and I hope we are...I've been in your shoes but with an old girlfriend...and it was a couch, not a pool table...sucks :().
Go modern with new 105 in silver but... 1) Use DA 10spd DT shifters 2) Use a 5500-series crankset (although that means you'll need an Octalink BB) to look a little more period (modern Shimano crankets are alien parts or something). 3) Use the modern BL-R600 brake levers. Modern yet classic looking. |
You could look into the microshift 10 speed group. Supposedly very good for the cost.
|
STI? Get real. Ergo's all the way, Doubletap if you must compromise.
|
Very true, OFG. Ergo's are better than STI's any day of the week. Though the new STI body shapes are nice to hold.
-Gene- |
Putting Ergos on that fine Japanese frame would be an obscene travesty...it must be Japanese components.
Modern 10 speed Shimano. DA DT shifters. BL-R600 levers. Older crankset to avoid the new alien cranks. :thumb: |

Sorry, go with the best, and that's either Campy or Sram. Who wants those horrendous growths sticking up off their bars?

Burn the pool table and stay with DT's.

1. Give the pool table to your best friend, with a hidden "surprise" in the ball return gulleys. 2. Sell the jewelery on Craigslist. 3. Use downtube shifters. There's a reason they call 'em STI shifters, as your wife might soon find out. -Kurt |
Sir,
I wholeheartedly approve of your sense of evil. :D I might just burn the pool table in the friends yard, or possibly on his front porch. (Yes this is a joke, I neither advocate nor encourage arson or any related activities!)

On the contrary:

That is a really old, really good joke. I've heard it so many times, yet I failed to see it coming. :D
DT shifters. |
I actually felt terrible reading it, and upon seeing the joke, didn't feel entirely better. Joke's on me, I guess.
|
Alan, you are a very, very evil man.
|
1) Don't give up a good pool table.
2) Phone video-YouTube is your new best friend. 3) DT shifters, but 2x10 DA. |
Well, I hope I gave y'all a chuckle. A few of you perhaps I owe an apology to, or maybe I should invite you to play poker, I'm not sure which.
As FYF noted this story has been around a while in various guises, the version I first read involved a cheating wife and a blackface Fender amp, the ending being a question about what capacitors he should use in the amp rebuild. In reality I do not have: a Team Miyata a rec room a pool table a best friend next door a cheating wife any drivetrain components more recent than index shifting, and only one of those The wife has been out of town for a week but she's at a gathering of fiddle players, banjo players, dulcimer players, shape-note singers, and other amateur musicians, and as she puts it, most of the guys 'look like Santa Claus.' Not that there's anything wrong with that. I sure hope she thinks this is funny. |
My answer would have been to set up a video feed to your web cam, create an "adult" website, and charge $20/month membership to view the movies. You'd be rolling in dough so fast it'll make your head spin, you'd get to retire and buy whatever you want, plus you'd exact sweet revenge as a bonus.
A win/win all the way around. :) P.S. - even guys shaped like Santa Claus have needs. :innocent: |

Choose good angles - if you have a drop ceiling, core out a small, inconspicuous hole in the paneling for a "top shot." -Kurt |
