Where can I get a frame pump?
 

I'd like one of those old fashioned stick pumps for the Raleigh. I looked at VO and N-bar but found nothing. Any suggestions?

I don't know why people want that style anymore, they were a pain in the a@@, I had one in the 1970's, called it oh s**t, because any time you were climbing a steeper hill, it would fall off, go rolling down the hill, so that you had to turn around and go after it, and climb the stupid hill again. When this happened you would say "oh s**t!!!", and go after it. The steeper the hill, the longer it would wait to fall off. After a particularly steep climb it fell off at the top, I stopped and watch it roll down, near the bottom it, hit a pebble and rolled into the middle of the road where it met with a 5 ton truck, that was the end of that particular pump. The modern style don't look as appropriate, but have a better mounting system. I'm actually thinking of getting a small saddle bag and adding a CO2 inflator for my old Raleigh as that would give a clean frame look, but still the ability to pump up a tire on the road.

+1 Those things drove me nuts. I don't like water bottles cluttering up my frame, so you can imagine how I feel about frame pumps, or those mini-pumps, too. On a touring bike, no problem, they're supposed to look like the station wagon of bicycles....

I was not a convert to CO2 until I used one a couple of times.
Sure, I blew a tube to smithereens, but it was kinda cool..

I've put recycling bins at my local shops so riders can bring in the old cartridges.
They should be able to be refilled, or at the least, be recycled...

They don't want "that style"...they just want "style" . Raleigh roadsters with all of the accessories are the most coveted of all.

I mortified to think about actually inflating a tire with one of them. They have more value as clubs with which one can vainly flail at aggressive dogs. Keep the CO2 in the saddle bag.

Best place to find a vintage pump is on a donor bike. Second best place is ebay.

Those pumps with the hose were lousy. The most I ever got out of one was about 60 psi.

BTW, I've never used CO2. How do you put a little blip of air in the tube before you inflate the tire?

A bike with braze on pump pegs looks a little silly without a pump there. Plus, you get all of "What are those little pegs for?" questions.

Yes, but I wasn't going to set you guys up that easy.

The Ex got one of those for the Raleigh I bought for her (grrr), but the vinyl tube wouldn't hold air - it just pushed all the air out of the fittings. No big deal if you're just wanting one for show, but otherwise, I'd spring for something a bit better quality.

Then again, you could take the pump apart and repair/replace/retrofit the parts to make it function properly. I'd imagine it's the leather washer that's the problem. If it's the hose, or also the hose, repair/replace that.

100 psi is a good benchmark for what it should be capable of delivering. Silca pumps can deliver this and more. That's why they are so well respected.

A friend of mine in Pawtucket, R.I. has some NOS Zefal HPX pumps. PM me if anyone wants to get in touch with him. As far as I know, he's not a member of this forum. He has a basement and garage full of bike stuff, mostly C&V.

That Zefal is a heck of a pump. In my opinion, it blows the cr@p out of the Silca.

My Presta HPX has been in service for over 20 years and it's the only pump I have. Someone jammed it on to a Schrader valve years ago and even bent the head. I bent it back and it's been pumping just like nothing happened.

This shows you are pumped about Zefal pumps. As you say, the Zefal pump blows away the Silca. In the high pressure environment we live in, something is bound to blow, sooner or later. If you get everyone else pumped up about Zefals there will be heavy pressure on the remaining supplies in inventory.

I could go on, but I don't want to blow it.
