Early Nishiki Olympic Questions

How is/was the early Nishiki Olympic? There is one down at the local bike coop for $65 in relatively clean shape. It is a 58 cm, my size.

I would guess it is about a 1973 or so as it has a cottered steel crankset, 5 speed freewheel, Dia Compe center pull brakes and steel rims. I did not see a frame material sticker but the dropouts appear to be forged rather than stamped sheet metal.

Anyone familiar with early Nishiki bikes and is this a relatively decent bike from the era?

It would be good, but low end. The dropouts are stamped with another piece welded on that make it appear forged. The frame is your basic gaspipe, I bought a new International back in the day, it had chromoly tubing of some sort.

It's worth around $65 if it's in really nice shape. In other words it's not a bad price but it's not a bargain. I tend to stay away from cottered crank bikes as it is a pain to convert them. Add to that steel wheels, I'll bet you can injure your back just picking it up.
BTW, I have a 74 International. Nice HiTen frame, butted I think, alloy wheels, dual QRs, alloy bars, cotterless, alloy cranks that bike would be worth going after for $65.
Nishiki back in the early 70's was a good brand, but nothing to get too excited about. Their 1980s bikes get a lot of attention from Nishiki fans.

Decent bike? Not to me. Cottered crank, steel rims, high ten steel frame. Typical entry level bike from that era. And consider entry level back then was pretty low end. I would aim higher. I had a 1974 Olympic, and currently have 3 1973 Internationals. The International is head and shoulders better bike: alloy rims, three piece crank, cromoly frame, good Suntour V GT RD.
