Sturmey Archer Vintage Dynohubs
I think this was mentioned recently but I can't find where for the life of me...
Did Sturmey Archer make a 36 hole Front Dynohub in the 50's and 60's or just 32 & 28 hole?
I'm looking for a 50's vintage 36 hole fron dynohub and all I can find is 32 hole.

Yes they did I have one on a 53 schwinn paramount tourist. I might have an extra one laced to a schwinn rim I will check and let you know

I have a '51 "36" with the bakelite cover but it belongs on a bike. I have an extra '73 with 36 holes if your interested.

AFAIK know they made them pretty much from the beginning, not all cycle manufacturers were using the Raleigh 32/40 standard. Sturmey-Archer was building a lot of hubs for other cycle manufacturers to their specifications. I have seen 28, 32, and 36 hole dyno hubs. Getting a given date is going to be harder.

36 in a front is harder to find than a 32, by far. I looked for a decent 36 front for my '74 Sports for almost 5 years. I eventually gave up and swapped in a 32 wheel with 32 spoke Dynohub in front.

They made 32 hole hubs for the English market; and they made 36 hole hubs for all the other ones (American, French, German, Italian, &c). For some reason, this adds up to a lot of 32's and a few 36's. Around 1974 the English market switched to 36 too. Aside from that, starting in about 1964 they also made 28 holers for the small-wheeled bicycles market; mostly for the Raleigh RSW 16 deluxe model, which came with dynohub and highly cool head and tail lights built into (not just onto) the fenders. Also Moultons and, later, Raleigh Twenties had 28 hole dynohubs.
So, if you want an early 50's 36 hole front dynohub... an old Schwinn shop is the place.
By the way, I was talking to one of the guys at Kopps, in Princeton, and he mentioned that they have NOS dynohub wheels up in the attic. I'd bet they're 36 holers, but I'm speculating.

The guys at Kopps are really friendly, but also really busy. If you want them to go up in the attic to look for something, wait until October at the earliest... oh, maybe January would be better. In August, not only are they really busy, but it's unbelievably hot up there.
Actually, I have a 36 hole dynohub, I think it's a '74, on my wife's bike... Probably not what you're looking for, right? I've been thinking of switching it for one of those new dyno-drum hubs... could easily be persuaded. But if you want something from the 50's, then a 70's hub won't interest you... never mind.
