Ofmega BB taper?

Hello Everyone. I apologize for asking such a rookie question but I did not see Ofmega on sheldons website nor do I have time to look it here. ( am leaving home for NJ again and need to know what tools to bring.

is an '88ish Ofmega BB spindle ISO or JIS or god forbid Campi? I need to ovehaul the BB on new to me Trofeo but would rather just replace it is a $50ish shimano will fit the taper. plus then I don't have to drag the extra BB tools around for three weeks.

thanks for your help. yes this is one of those many yhings you learn and relearn over the years.

IIRC, Sheldon claims Ofmega had their own taper that doesn't fit any of the above. Others disagree.

Problem is, even if you could mate up the JIS OK, you'd still have to figure out the difference in spindle length required.

OH drat and double drat!! (what is a drat?) anyway thanks ExPres I missed that little note :(

(Note: Old Ofmega/Avocet spindles were quite a bit skinnier/longer even than ISO. There are no modern bottom brackets that work with old Ofmega/Avocet cranks.)

I hope the spindle is in good shape. lets call this case closed unless someone has a bright idea.

YRMV, and take this with grain of salt...but I'm one of those who disagree with the info on Sheldon's site concerning the unique taper of Ofmega/Avocet spindles. based solely on my own limited experience: I've never seen an Of/Avo spindle that wasn't ISO, and furthermore I'd bet that by '88 it would be even more unlikely that any EU manufacturer wasn't on-board the ISO standards...but I may never have encountered an "old" one.

I am running a Bianchi labeled ofmega sr clone on a campy cup/ball BB, no problems so far.

I've had both on my Marinoni.
I can tell you that although the Campy crankset will fit on the Ofmega spindle it is not the same taper. Its close but not the same.

Here's what my failing memory can remember. I had an mid 80's Ofmega crank with Bianchi panto rings that was definitely not ISO. It mounted outboard or proud on an ISO axle. I used a Japanese/JIS(?) taper axle, adjusting for spindle length. It was not normal and still didn't seat properly, all the way on.

Darlin,

I put a Campy crank set on my 85 Ofmega BB, and it worked like a charm.

I took an Ofmega crank set off a 97 Trofeo and replaced it with a 9-sp Veloce, ditto-charming.

Same thing with a Miche.

Good luck.

well I guess all I can do is break out the calipers and do a little comparison.

I did just that Jim and got to thinking that perhaps it would be ISO and was going to check with a Sugino spindle I had here.

however the crank arms seem to have made my decesion as to what BB I need. the removal threads in the drive side stripped out! :( I was threaded in my park tool and it seemed tight and not deep enough. so out comes the Stein tool and it goes in OK but still not deep enough. OK I'll try anyway. it seems that perhaps the threads were not machined completely and there were only about 3 to begin with 2 of which are gone now :(

hopefull I can get a ford wrench in there and get the fixed cup and all off. lets see where is the Record crank...Gipiemme......

Chombi 08-04-10 03:17 PM

IIRC, ISO is pretty much the universal standard for most Euro brands BB tapers and it will be clearly marked if it is a JIS.
