Years ago, as a young man, I was quite an active cyclist and used to ride a bike built with Reynolds 531 tubing. Then I bought my first car . . . .
Now that I am living in a small village I have recently taken up cycling again and have a mountain bike. However, I just spotted a vintage Peugeot machine (with 531 tubing) for sale at a bargain price and just had to buy it.
Can anyone please help me find out which model it is? Details follow:

Serial number: 7.02.1473
Colour : silver
Simplex gears (see pic)
Reynolds decals (see pic)

Having Reynolds decals (presuming it is Reynolds 531 tubing) narrows it down quite a bit. I believe that would make it something that had the letter 'X' in it's designation (i.e. PX-10).

Welcome to the party Woodsman, and a wow from me also.

I've been poking around and what I think you have there is a 1977-79 PY-10/CP. In other words, the best version of their highest-end bike. Wow again.

531SL was supposed to have been introduced in '77 and the decal scheme changed in '80 so that gives you a decent year range. The PY-10 is the only thing which shows that tubing in my catalogs, though T-Mar has mentioned that the PZ10 and Pro10 used that tubing as well. I didn't try to figure out when those models were made. The crank and front derailleur have obviously been changed to something much newer but the rest of it seems to fit. You may even have better luck finding replacement original parts than we do over here.

Hi Woodsman, Welcome to this Forum. Love your Pug - plenty of Peugeot experts here who are based in the US. I've noticed that over here in the UK the British market Peugeots seem to have model names rather than numbers (e.g. Peugeot Premiere), but are similar to those with numbers sold in America and France. Is that a Stronglight 300 crankset? Where are you based in the UK? I'm in the South East and there are also a number of active C&V Forum members this side of the Atlantic

First generation Retrofriction shifters, Mafac 2000 brakes and a Super LJ rear derailer!

I love the details around the brazed-on centerpull brakes. The curved rear bridge is a beautiful thing...

That's a great bike, and I don't think I've ever seen one like it. If it were mine, I'd start looking around for a saddle that's worthy of the bike and its vintage. If you're going to tear things down, you can remove the rust from chromed or painted steel using an oxalic acid solution (search for this on Google or in this forum), but don't use it on aluminum alloy parts or zinc-plated parts (some fasteners, for instance -- zinc is quite reactive and disappears in a big hurry with that stuff.

I think everyone has done good job in identifying the bike. Its clearly a PY10 from the late 70's. Based on your serial number it could be February of 1977 production but it really depends on the format and type of stamping of the serial number. I previouslt though the 'new' format didnt begin untill 1979 but I have seen a few bikes form earlier years with the new format. Any chance you can post a pic of the number?

The crank is a Stronglight (see pic on prev post) but I don't know what model.
I'm based in Gloucestershire by the way - a bit of a pedal from the South East!

The hand stamped serial number leads me to believe it was a custom order frameset/bike from the special workshop versus being a production model PY10. Of note is the under BB FD cable while the RD guide is above.

miamijim - does this make it rare, or do you think lots of these were produced?
