My new Miyata predates the available online catalogs-any guess as to orig. spec?
When I saw this bike posted, the pictures were crumby and I said to myself: "If it has stamped dropouts or a high-ten frame I'm walking away"--Well, it has both of those things and is now staring at me from across my apartment. Condition was very nice (though the paint isn't the best) and it had a surprisingly smooth ride.
Flat black paint. Tubing sticker reads:1024 Built with high tensile butted steel tubes. Suntour barcons, VGT rd, nice Miyata branded crank, Dia Compe brakes, SR bars and Stem, buttery smooth Sunshine hubs laced to Araya alloy rims.
My question--seems like Miyata didn't offer too many bikes with stamped dropouts so this bike must have been very low end. However, it rides very well and is decked out with nice middle of the road components and alum. wheels. Is this how the bike came from the factory or has somebody simply upgraded a bottom end frame? I've searched and found a bunch of old posts by T-Mar but nothing that shed any light on what this bike may have been called or built with originally.
(pardon the iPhone pics, I can take more/better shots if that might help anybody)

Dates range from mid to late 1977, making this most likely a 77 or 78 model. However, that doesn't really help me figure out model or original spec as I can't find a 77 or 78 catalog.
Any other guesses or does anybody know of pre-81 Miyata catalogs online?

my '84 Miyata 110 had stamped dropouts...I believe the 210 did as well, at least in the early 80's.

Catalog shows the 84 110 (as well as 100 and 90) as having forged drops.
I just can't seem to find another bike like mine. For now I'll just assume it was a low end 70's frame that somebody upgraded to nicer alloy wheels, components, barcons..etc. Doesn't really matter much as I enjoy the ride and it looks pretty nice. Just curious I guess.

This may be beyond obvious, but have you checked the serial #? First letter indicates year...but you know this. I bet it is just barely pre-1981, maybe 79 or 80; the late 70s bikes that have come up here have more '70s looking' graphics, chrome cable guides on the top tube, etc. Also in the 70s Miyata used names rather than numbers, ie 'Frontier.'
Here's the 1981 catalog page for the 210 and 110. Same pie-plate dork disk, and it looks like a derailleur hanger on the 110, looks like the same crankset as well. Note that though it only has cr-mo main tubes, rims, crankset and the front hub are alloy. 110 is probably what you have, just a year or two earlier.

ps: that is a scrape on the chainstay behind the crank, right, not a decal?

What you see behind the crank I believe is the aftermarket chain stay protector which has a logo on it.

You are right, I didn't look at the 1981 specs page because the rims look alloy in the picture (nice airbrushing).
But check this old thread...a couple of 1977 bikes from original owners (!) that seem to share characteristics with yours, even including the bar end shifters. Not everything matches but it's close.

Huh that is definitely helpful. So maybe the bar ends are original.
Thanks for the link!
Is T-Mar still around? It seems that whenever I search for information I'm turning up his old posts.
