Have you downloaded the Nitrogen plug-in for your browser?

If you're riding a CF bike and your tires are NOT filled with nitrogen..... Good God man - what are you, retahded? The spontaneous combustion properties of CF are well-documented, and when you combine that with tires that filled with ordinary oxygen....look out.

Excerpted from an article I read on the subject:

......nitrogen doesn't support combustion, which is one reason aircraft and the space shuttle use nitrogen in their tires. The wisdom of this precaution was brought home by the crash of Mexicana Airlines flight 940 on March 31, 1986. Shortly after the Boeing 727 took off from Mexico City en route to Puerto Vallarta, an overheated landing-gear brake caused a tire improperly filled with air instead of nitrogen to overheat as well and explode, rupturing fuel and hydraulic lines. The ensuing fire and crash killed 167 passengers and crew......

I can imagine it now, fixie rider fills tired with H, then skids to a stop burning through the tire and tube and and the H ignites. Hindenburg.

About 2 years ago Nitrogen filled tires were the rage at the local new car dealerships, level heads must have prevailed at some point, I don't see the vendors coming around now. It was quite a show, the truck would have these cool neon blue hoses connecting to the tires, all four at once... The operator could not explain how they got a vacuum prior to dispensing the nitrogen... You are not supposed to ask questions like that, its not polite.

I was going to try to figure out what was wrong, but I don't see the link.

the main advantage to nitrogen is that the bottled stuff doesn't contain water. Therefore, it doesn't expand much when it heats, unlike un-dried compressed air, which expands a lot. This might matter in your car and if you are riding a tandem through the Alps.

Commercial places use it to steal money, a tank with enough nitrogen to fill every car tire in my town costs about $10. To a great extent, air is nitrogen. So there is nothing wrong with using it, in effect, you're already using it.

We sold Nitrofill at the place I work, personally I think it's a scam.

Yup, to the extent of about 78%. :)

yeah but thats 22% NOT nitrogen which is some amateurish garbage ;)

unterhausen 08-05-10 03:18 PM

I dunno, I'm fond of breathing it. The real rip-off is as follows: take air, sell the nitrogen at the car mechanics for 50000x the wholesale price. Sell the oxygen at an oxygen bar for 5000x the wholesale price. You're left with argon and other commercially useful gases which you can sell to the welding supply.

Yeah, but 99.6% of that 78% is plain old Nitrogen 14...

True connoisseurs demand Nitrogen 15 and will pay the price.
Yes, it's a heavier isotope... not for weight weenies.

David Newton 08-05-10 05:33 PM

I load up on nitrous oxide, makes me faster, all the hot-rodders use it.

khatfull 08-05-10 05:40 PM

I knew I could count on everyone when I mentioned helium :)

I prefer our version

Andrew F 08-05-10 08:12 PM

Well this is just great....Zaphod I took your advice literaly...filled both tires 110psi of Hydorgen then took a ride up the hill to the Quick Chek for a Slush Puppi. Fast I tell ya!! Anyway, I left the bike leaning against the window and when I came out it was gone! Crap! Then I noticed everyone in the parking lot, heads bent back staring skyward. Yep their she goes...floated away. I'll remember to tether the next one.

Michael Angelo 08-05-10 08:20 PM

Nitrogen is an inert gas, and supposedly doesn't hold moisture, which supposedly is bad for tires/rubber. This is the reason it's used in the aircraft industry ,landing gear struts, to any pnuematic system. Moisture in those systems would spell disaster. Someone put 2&2 together invented Nitrofil and commenced scaring the general public.

All one had to do is make sure tires are in good shape, have the correct amount of air pressure, and enough tread depth.Automotively speaking.

Fissile 08-05-10 08:31 PM

Man, I'm way ahead of you. I got all my tire inflators loaded with whippet cartridges.
