I had a neighbor back in NYC whose son perished on 9/11 when Tower1 fell. He was a broadcast engineer for ABC and he and the crew were stuck in the antenna. He had gotten into road cycling. And was a fanatic. After 9/11, his belongings were moved to a boathouse in NJ for storage. There it sat for years. Among the items were his daily Cannondale, and 2 other "high end European" bikes, a Park work stand and indoor trainer. I was asked by an in-law if I was interested in them, or know of someone. He knew they were worth some coin. But I had no spare cash as I was about to move to the Southwest. I could only offer $500. But then the mother overheard the conversation and inquired why we were discussing Don's things. When she heard I might be interested, she offered all of his cycling gear to me gratis. I didn't think the in-law was happy. But it wasn't his property. It still required him to retrieve them though. I couldn't arrange the logistics and time of my move to coincide with his schedule. And never did get any of the bikes, parts, tools and stands.
The mother knew of my fondness for bikes. She always thought I was similar to her son as we were both engineers and stubborn DIYers. I would have kept them and never would flip them. I took 9/11 pretty personally being from NYC, and knowing Don DiFranco lost his life that tragic day.

Touching story, maybe one day the stars will align for you.
My only regret is flipping my Klein Custom, I got it for $45 at a garage sale, did a little research, sold it for $350 (it was to small for me) only to see the guy sell it on ebay for $750
Also flipped a Paramount series 7 with full 600 group, flight deck brifters, I made a decent profit but it was a great bike and kinda do want it back.
Although I am really enjoying my 88 Ironman Master I picked up for $60

in the early 80s i bought a bare frame/fork 72 Paramount that had been rattlecanned metallic blue, for $125. it sat for a few years, then i had Richardson Bike Mart send it out to Medici Cycles for full braze-ons and a Miami Vice paint job. i built it up with Phil Wood hubs on Mavic tubular rims, Campy Nuovo/Super Record gear, Cinelli bars and stem, and a Turbo saddle. then, i forsook all forms of cycling/racing etc. my race bikes had been stolen, one by one, and the 'Mount was all that remained. i got into competitive swimming in the late 80s and stayed there. in 2007, i looked at the old 'Mount, and saw nothing but a good pile of dough sitting there not doing anything. i 'knew i'd never get back into cycling', and put it up for sale, eventually selling it on Velospace to the gent here on CV known as redxj, who answered my ad. i sold it to him along with a nice pile of misc. Campy gear, freewheels, Dura Ace stuff, etc. because, i just 'knew' i'd never cycle again. this year, i finally got my fill of competitive swimming and have been cycling again, and repurchasing at much inflated prices what i sold off in 07. still no 'Mount, but i have replaced the Grandis race bike of my early 80s hay day with another one, and i am very happy with that. and i still want another Paramount

Colnago "Bi-tubo". Aluminum frame anodized wine red, funky twin down-tubes, Campy Super Record, 60 cm, Colnago... $300. Answered the CL ad minutes after it was posted + it was already gone.
