Craigslist.....road bikes

So as i'm doing my daily scans on craigslist for more bikes to add to my collection or possible flippers i realized that yesterday was like an outbreak of vintage bikes. There was the normal miele's and norco's and so on, but there were so many more high end ones, most too much for me but still a pleasure to look at. These bikes are from here in the Toronto Canada market, which is already way too high priced like any busy commuter city market, or places with people with lots of money...

I thought i'd post some here incase anyone was looking for them, plus they're fun to look at anyways, enjoy...

If there's anything interesting or usual in you area, post it here too....

This was posted on CL like a week ago, but it was so nice i'd thought i would link it anyways..

man i wish i had more money haha.... so many nice bikes so little money...

Flip bikes rarely last long enough for a "hey here's a great deal" posting. People like me will snap them up.

I see zero flip potential in my market for the bikes you have listed. And I avoid tying up that much money in any single bike, as it increases risk. Possible part outs via ebay, but the variance in ebay pricing is huge, so its back to too much risk.

I hate to see that Merckx top tube in the bike stand clamp.....

+1...those are ebay prices, nothing to jump at. If your dream bike is a Merckx, sure, go for it...keep it and love it. If you're trying to profit or save money? Hold off.

They are beauties to consider for your own stable. I rarely spend more than $100 for a bike - the vast majority cost $50 or less. That, in itself, makes it hard to find bikes. I have profited on a few $200 purchases and a couple $300 purchases. At $300 it's usually a bike for my stable.
On my local Craigslist I've noticed a lack of road bikes in general, and a lack of low cost flip material specifically for the last two months. My two local community sales are both hitting on the same Saturday in September so I'm hoping to acquire at least a dozen good flip candidates and maybe a keeper.

My experience is pretty similar. I usually pay around $50, picked up two bikes yesterday: one was $30, the other was $70. I occasionally will pay over the $100 mark, but it has to be something good. Almost every bike I have paid over $100 for was either a touring bike, or a brifter bike.

If you are going to flip bikes, you have to continually adjust your strategy. If finding bikes on Craigs List worked, but no longer is working, time to look elsewhere. Two years ago, almost every bike I flipped came from a thrift store. Now I never find a decent bike at a thrift store. So that source is gone (although I still look). Then I was finding bikes on Craigs List, then through the neighborhood newsletter, then word of mouth, garage sales, etc.

The one strategy that has worked throughout this entire time is to pick up bikes in the middle of winter (January) when no one wants them. Refurb them, and hold them until May, and start selling. For this to work, you need an adequate bike fund (as money goes out, but nothing is coming in), a lot of confidence, and you need a lot of room to store bikes.

I found some incredible deals last January.

Agreed. I'm not a top tube clamper.

If they get $1,300 for that nice SL Merckx, I know where someone can get the next one for the same price with 2009 Campy Centaur and a fresh set of Open Pros with Record hubs.

Just sayin.....

I'll show my age here and say yes I do!

Pretty frame.

It would be interesting to see where this ends up.

The guy at Yonge and Bloor has been trying to unload those bikes for months now, he started his posting on Kijiji in the winter. As Konaaron says, they are ebay prices, same with the 'Cam' guy.

If you are ever in the Junction area, drop in on High Park Cycle on the north side of Dundas, just west of Keele. The collection of gorgeous road bikes in that shop is unbelievable. To give you a sense of it, in the window he has a Gold Line Casati with full Record including Delta brakes and a SLX Moser with Nuovo Record, the Moser is NOS. And that is just the window!

This is the best deal on the Toronto CL today: http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/bik/1917979408.html

Only one way to know...

I would imagine that the person who listed that ad has had at least 40 emails; if you really want it, offer her $300 in the subject line and then include your phone number in the email.
