How to clean up an old frame and save it from rusting?

I have a 1966 Schwinn Paramount P13 that was my fathers. It was my first "real" bicycle that I ever did any group riding with.

It's beautiful...yellow frame, chrome Nervex lugs, red pin striping, Campy equipped (I'll get the pictures up soon, I promise!).

Anyhow, it's got a lot of patina. Even though the pin striping as worn and faded in many places, the chrome cleaned up BEAUTIFULLY and it really pops. I'm wondering what/how to best "bring back" the paint (decals are in fair condition as well) and preserve it so that it doesn't end up rusting over the years.

There's a few spots where the paint has been chipped off, leaving only bare steel.

I'm thinking a good cleaning, some polishing compound, and then followed by a professionally applied clear coat that's NOT glossy (if one exists).

Anyone have any other suggestions? I've considered having the entire frame/fork repainted but then it looses all it's beautiful wear marks.

Thanks!
Andy

Photos please! Generally speaking, the clean, polish, and wax route is the best way to go.

I'm sure there is a flat clear coat a professional painter could apply. I would also like to see pictures!!

You've got a Paramount! Nice. Extra cool that it was your dad's. Type this into Google, "oxalic acid site:bikeforums.net". Oxalic acid will bring that headset back to life. I agree with the clean, polish and wax approach. It's got a cool patina to it.

Nice Murphys reference in your handle.

Great bike! I especially like the lug detailing and Olympic rings decal.

Be sure to check out Randy Jawa's excellent "My Ten Speeds" site with lots of helpful info on prepping/restoring a frame:
