Fork Idea
 

I have been fiddling with old frames now for a few years, and I am always happy when I see old steel rolling down the road. But I also see lots of frames homeless from lack of a fork.

Having spent a good share of bucks on Velo Orange stuff, they seem to have done retro quite well...

I have thought that what would be nice to have imported is a one inch size front fork, with braze ons for panniers and one version in cantilevers and one in caliper. If it were chromed, and the steerer was made extra long, it could be cut and threaded locally for the frame in question. And paint or powder coated as desired.

Any thoughts on getting a 'generic' fork imported?

Have you looked and found these to be unavailable?

I would guess you can only buy a pretty plain fork, but then again I haven't really looked that hard.

Soma already makes road versions. The problem isn't availability, it's the price. If it could be sold to the public for $50 or less - as opposed to Soma's $150 for their chromed forks - than you'd have a chance of selling quite a few.

i did some serious scouring of the web and the eBay back in May when I purchased a Fuji Touring frame w/o a fork.

Ideally I wanted a 1" threaded Cr-Mo fork with double eyelets & Canti Brakes. The range of choices was pretty surprisingly wide, but I was unable to really even come close to what I wanted.

Dimension makes a bunch of replacement forks both in Hi-Ten and Cr-Mo steel; Threaded & Threadless.

Surly LHT and CrossCheck forks are sold in 1"

i'm with you. it is a good idea, but probably a huge undertaking.

i have a bike (with cantis) that came with a bent fork. i tried to find a decent fork that was 1" threaded (long), canti mounts, and didn't have awful looking MTB sloping. rack mounts and chrome would have been perfect...but i couldn't find it. i'm cheap, so $100 would probably have been my cutoff.

Ive been trying to find a threaded fork for a 58.5 seat tubed miele I have for quite a long time and the cheapest option I could come up with is a 4130 fork through ebay for $80 something, factor in shipping charges and its just not worth it. Guess im kicking myself for selling a nice aluminum fork that woulda worked great for $50 a few months before.

Yeah, the Surly forks come closest in my experience.

I'm always on the lookout for something with lugged crown, two eyelets, rack mount, cantis, long-a$$ 1" steerer. Practical for town bikes with lots of racks and such. Never anything quite right. The cheapie dimension forks have no features. None of the Surly forks meet all these criteria, and the price--while not totally unreasonable--is a lot to pay for something that's not the right thing.

Yes, if dimension sold something like this, I'd snap up a few.

Oh - forgot to mention - for the dual-eyelet w/canti option, the Kogswell P/R fork is an option. Unpainted, your choice of 700C or 650B, IIRC.
