New pics - S3X hub & '82 Raleigh Comp.

It's mid-night, I just finished putting the pedals and clips on my latest endeavor, an '82 Raleigh Competition frame built up with a SA s3x fixedgear 3 speed hub. It's light, quick, fast and a bunch of fun. Just ran some laps in a parking lot.

The hub is incredible, a little free play in the lowest gear, the two higher gears are tight and smooth. Shifts are flawless, move the Barcon, thud, and the switch is complete, Waaaahoooo!

I'm tired, I'll post some pics. on Wednesday.

Vintage GB Wingnuts of course- bought them years ago because I might use them someday. Had to open up the cup for the chain abit, apparently it ( The chain) is a wee bit bigger than before. Now I've gotta take a few pics. as promised and get them posted.

I started with a frame and fork I picked up on ebay. No grinding or cutting took place, I wanted to preserve the near pristine frame. The hub is shifted through a barcon, which is cabled up the bars to the stem and then down the tube using the original cable guides. The chain ring is 46T and the sproket is 16T. The rims are Ritchey semi aeros with DT spokes 32h front and 36H rear. The front wheel has vintage Q-R's and the rear sports a set of vintage GB wingnuts. The dropouts are Suntour Suberbe without any eyelets. A BF member was kind enough to supply me with a set of polished aluminum Bluemel Shorties in the event I want to go fender (ish)

I want to do a GP or super course like this..
My original plan when I started with the idea was to build up a Supercourse with the s3x hub, bluemel light weight fenders and a large vintage saddle bag. Found the GS frame and the rest is history. I'd like to find a Supercourse and maybe do a 5spd IGH. Donors anyone?

Very nice, very classic build! It's only too bad that the S3X on the hub looks so modern in comparison with all the other nice vintage touches you put on it, but that wouldn't stop me from building up a bike like this!

I built a bike with an S3X last month, and all my other bikes have been gathering dust since. That thing is just a blast. It was my first go at a fixed gear of any kind, but I didn't find it too hard to adapt.
Have you found neutral yet? It's there, between first and second. If you knock the shifter out of it's detent in first, you'll get some freewheeling action.

Only once, thought maybe I needed to adjust the cable tension.

At least it's not bubble gum pink!
Oh, I'm gonna do that next week, bought the spray bomb already. Ya think I should flip the bars and chop'em down to bullhorns? Hey, those brakes are kinda useless too!

too bad that the S3X on the hub looks so modern
minor annoyance, I'm thinkin a few days worth of road dirt dust will help blend everything nicely

Thanks for all your kind comments, you all have been my inspiration in keeping it traditional. Though I'm feeling I should install the Shorties and post a pic just to stir up alittle heated commentary!

Great work Andrew, did you do the wheelbuilding as well?

A 5 speed IGH super course would be pretty rockin...if I decide to get rid of my SC, i'll give ya a shout.

So take the brakes off, get some Converse All-Stars and some Tight Jeans and You'll be ready for the next NYC Critical Mass

Really nice bike. I'd need a step ladder to get on it.
My S3X has been sitting in its box since March. Don't know if it's for lack of interest, too busy, or that I made my own multispeed fixed gear hubs while waiting for the S3X to graduate from vaporware and don't care now. Or I'm waiting for winter so I can build wheels in an unheated garage.

Nope, pussed out and had it done, I have a set of 28"s with New Departure Hubs that I plan on learn wheel building on. That will be a slow moving bike, less opportunity for physical harm (to myself)

bikeamper- You need to build it into something, it's really smoooooth and sweet.
