Another ID thread -- interesting downtube

Hey there C&V folks,

I'm looking at purchasing this bike, but the current owner doesn't know anything about the frame and it appears a bit non-standard to me. I thought you guys might be able to throw me a bone and help me figure out what it is. All I know is that it has been painted at least once and made it across the country twice. Here's some photos (click to make bigger):

Please respond quickly, because I have to make a decision before the offer disappears...

Thanks for any help.

And a transcript of the craigslist ad:

Considering selling great touring bike. The frame is strong and designed for someone tall (I am 6' and the bike is nearly too big for me). The bike is a 21 speed with mustache handlebars (for multiple had positions) and handlebar end gear shifters. The tires are Schwalbe Marathons, non-knobby 26" mountain bike tires. The frame could use a new paint job. The bike has an ultra comfortable Cloud 9 brand seat, and front as well as back pannier racks. I am also willing to throw in the pair of waterproof Axiom panniers.

The bike is only available today and early tomorrow, as I fly out tomorrow evening and the bike will be coming with me if it doesn't sell.

$175.00 or best offer

it reminds me of a early '90s Haro MTB. it certainly seems to be a workhorse though

methinks parking it in that particular vine may not have been such a good idea. unless my tired/strained eyes are fooling me, i doubt she was wearing that grin later.

Speaking as a lifelong resident of Indiana, I wouldn't go within 20 feet of that tree, positive ID of vine or no.

Sweet bike, tho.

Well, the girl's cute. It's one of those Nishiki Alien/Haro elevated stay MTB's from about 88-90 that had elevated stays to deal with "chain suck". Looks like a 21/22" freame. Price isn't bad but the crankset's a boat anchor unit. Seems like a nice basis for a commuter/beer fetcher.

If you're planning on touring, I don't think you could do any better than this for $175. Talk her down to $150 and get her to throw in the panniers and you have a pretty awesome deal.

Lots of interesting evolutionary dead ends during that period, including my Schwinn's under-chainstay U-brake and front RollerCam brake.

Oddly enough, that's just what I did :). I'm super excited about it. Everything works perfectly and shifts smoothly even though it's showing some pretty obvious signs of wear. This will eventually be my go to commuter / camping bike. Need to fine tune a few things first though.

Looks like you got a great deal. That is a really cool looking bike.

After it quit raining today, I took the bike out and snapped a few photos. I found the serial number on the bottom bracket. It reads: A320400. I'm not sure whether they are o's or 0's, but my guess is the latter.

Here are the new pictures -- there are more in this album)

If you need higher resolution images let me know. I might have downsized them one too many steps and can reupload if necessary. Again, thanks for any help.

Edit: a few people from MTBR thought it could be a Rocky Mountain Cirrus, DMS Kilamanjaro, or maybe a Nishiki Alien. I'm pretty sure it's a steel frame and it has era specific Shimano Exage 300 components along with BioPace chainrings if that helps at all.
