Univega Ultraleggera - photos.

I picked this up recently on Craigslist for less than the price of a pair of bibs and a jersey from Nashbar. Tange Prestige oversize 858 tubing, full 8 speed Dura Ace 8 Speed brifter group. This is a very nice bike.

I have more I will post later. Does anyone know where to get a dustcap for the cranks? I am missing one.

This is a keeper for sure. When I finish tuning and taping I will put up after photos.

Nice find!

illwafer 09-16-10 06:14 PM

nice one.

devinfan 09-16-10 06:18 PM

Wow that's a great looking bike. Elegance and simplicity. I love the flite saddle with that bike, I hope you're not planning on changing it. What are you thinking for bar tape?

custermustache 09-16-10 07:05 PM

I'm thinking black tape, I'm pretty simple. I like the way the flite looks, but I have to see how it rides before I make any promises about leaving it on there.

I haven't ridden it yet, and I can't wait.

custermustache 09-16-10 07:06 PM

By the way, this thing must be pretty rare - these are now the only photos of this model on the web.

Bianchigirll 09-16-10 08:04 PM

why does the tubing decal look like a Prestige Mountain bike tubing? ghreat looking bike though but I think it needs some research.

custermustache 09-16-10 08:14 PM

It does say it is MTB tubing, I assume that is why it is "oversized". I have been researching and can find nothing.

unprintable 09-16-10 08:27 PM

Pretty weird... oversized Prestige tubing with Dura-Ace components. But pretty cool! I'm jealous!

mickey85 09-16-10 08:56 PM

I've been noticing that later (as in late 80's, early 90's) Univegas seem to generally come with oversized tubing...maybe I'm on something, but it certainly seems that way.

Beauty!

custermustache 09-16-10 10:00 PM

It's fast and light, that's for sure. The paint has some chips but it's a beautiful pearlescent white very lightly tinted pink. I'll take my after photos with a real camera.

custermustache 09-16-10 10:24 PM

Serial number 050. How do I date it?

cyclotoine 09-16-10 10:31 PM

need bigger photos! are the drop outs vertical? I love oversized steel roadbikes, nice find.

Look for date codes on the components. I would guess it is from around 1995, give or take a year.

canyoneagle 09-16-10 11:13 PM

Looks to be fillet brazed vs. tig welded. Very nice.
I think you've stumbled on to a real find! I doubt these were made in high volume. I could be wrong, but I've never seen or heard of that model.

Full Dura-Ace would have made this a fairly pricey bike when new. I would think that few people would be willing to spend the $ for Dura Ace but settle for a "generic" mass-market frame manufacturer with no racing involvement image. Most dura-ace buyers would want to hang it on a euro bike, a custom build or a Ti or Carbon frame. Same univega frame probably would have had a much broader appeal if it had 105 or ultegra parts to keep the price down.

I be that thing will go like stink in style and comfort, I would sure be happy to have found that!
Enjoy it!

Beautiful bike. I've always thought that Univegas were under rated, and that one seems to have been built to help dispel that myth.

rat fink 09-17-10 11:34 AM

Hot bike. I've seen that one a few times before, but it is quite rare. It might even be more rare than the Super Strada model.

4Rings6Stars 09-17-10 12:56 PM

Nice find. Looking to forward to some nicer pics when it's all ready!

When I answered a CL ad last winter for a Superstrada I was expecting the rare, older DA version and was disappointed to find this instead. Mid 90's tig welded version with RSX STI group. Can't really complain though, for $100 I got a great bad weather/commuter.

The newer Super Strada sure looks like the Raleigh R-500 I had:

It came with a near identical spec.

Nice find. How long is that stem?
